Wellness Wednesday: Is It a Cold or Allergies? 🤧
It can be tricky to tell the difference between a cold and allergies, especially when your child is sneezing, coughing, and dealing with nasal drainage. So we asked Dr. Phillips what the difference was, and here’s what he said!
A cold is caused by a virus and can sometimes lead to a low-grade fever, which allergies won’t. Nasal drainage from a cold may start off clear but often becomes greenish as the illness progresses. The inside of the nose may look bright red and inflamed, and symptoms usually go away within 5 to 7 days. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, it may point to a secondary infection.
Allergies, on the other hand, are triggered by things like pollen, dust, or pet dander and they’re not contagious. Allergy-related nasal drainage tends to stay clear, and the inside of the nose may appear pale or even purplish in color. Unlike a cold, allergy symptoms don’t just go away with time. They’ll persist until properly treated and exposure to the allergen is reduced.
If your child’s symptoms are lingering, worsening, or you’re just unsure, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to help guide your family through the sniffles!
