👊🏾 Ready to level up?
Here's the scenario: child points to the puppy and a caregiver says "The puppy is sleeping! Can you say the puppy is sleeping?" ...Silence.
This is where the idea of "levels" comes into play! If a child is communicating through gestures, sentences may be too big of a jump. For this example, the child is using gestures and the next level is sounds. Modeling "woof" or snoring sounds may be more likely to elicit a response.
Little ones may vary in the level of language they use throughout an activity (development is not always a straight line), but meeting the child at their current level and then moving up is a great place to start! Many of the resources I create include levels with suggested prompts so caregivers know exactly where to start 🤗
Expanding on the puppy example 🐶 -
Attention (looking at the puppy) -
Gestures (pointing at the puppy) -
Sounds ("Woof") -
Words ("Puppy") -
Phrases ("Night-night Puppy")

Reading story books and talking about pictures and vocabulary is so important! With each repetition of the story, the child should learn more about it and eventually talk more about the story than than the adult does.
It’s not just the adult reading and the child listening . The child should become the storyteller.
Have the conversations.
Make learning fun...🥰

With the Story Sidekick launch coming soon, I thought this would be great to share again.

Using literacy as your therapeutic base can be so powerful...and practical! It provides your students with an immediate opportunity to see their skill in action and why it is important to know.
-
Targeting vocabulary with books is perfect use but you can give that vocabulary lesson a boost when paired with dialogic reading styles as found in a study by Flack et al.,2017.

18 month old milestones for expressive language

You have asked (and asked.... sorry for the delay 🤣) for expressive language milestones and here they are! Stay tuned for more!

**It’s important to note that kids all develop at different rates. A milestone occurs when 90% of children have mastered a particular skill. I always recommend children who are not meeting milestones to be seen for an evaluation- it doesn’t necessarily mean they will need intervention (or that they won’t catch up) - but it does mean I would want a specialist to determine if there is a need for intervention or monitoring of speech development.

So true!

So true!

I see this said a lot these days (and get told it by many parents and therapists too). So, I thought I would take a second and address this. Yes, there are lots of “signs of autism”- and I mean a LOT. You’ve seen tons of them in google searches and there’s even more that are not found in those searches. I bet you and your child both do 1-2 of the things listed as “signs”. I know I have several, as does my son. BUT- autism is not made up of 1-2 signs. It is a CONSTELLATION of characteristics- which means if you have 1-2 characteristics, it does not mean you are autistic, it simply means you have 1-2 characteristics. So a child who is a late talker and a picky eater wouldn’t meet diagnostic criteria based on those two things, even though you would find both on a list of signs for autism. Differences would need to be noted in Language/Socialization AND Repetitive behaviors/special interests.

*please note that if you are saying this, it scares parents and often prevents them from seeking evaluations and often undermines therapists/assessor recommendations regarding referrals and diagnoses. If ANYONE thinks an autism evaluation should be completed, then an eval is necessary. If parents or therapists are uncomfortable with the evaluation results it’s TOTALLY OKAY to get a second (or even 3rd!) opinion.

Talk to your doctor about early intervention if you have concerns!

Talk to your doctor about early intervention if you have concerns!

The facts about boys talking later than girls. Do girls typically say first words earlier than boys? Yep, but on average only by a few weeks. Do girls have bigger vocabulary than boys at younger ages? Yep, one study found that by 16 months girls had an average of 95 words while boys averaged 25 words. Do girls begin combining words before boys? Yes, one study even found a three month difference in this skill. BUT- we need to note that these skills are ALL HAPPENING WITHIN THE AVERAGE RANGE. A milestone is when 90% of children master a specific skill. That includes boys and girls. So if your child isn’t meeting milestones- please don’t think “boys just develop later” and take a wait and see approach. An evaluation by a speech language pathologist is the best way to determine if there is a need for intervention- and early intervention is key to communication improvement!

As governors are trying to figure out how to ease back in to a new normal, please remember: one person’s choice is not a reflection on your choice.

🛑 Some people don’t agree with the state opening.... that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

🏡 Some people are still planning to stay home.... that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

🦠 Some are still scared of getting the virus and a second wave happening....that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

💰 Some are sighing with relief to go back to work knowing they may not lose their business or their homes....that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

👩🏾‍⚕️Some are thankful they can finally have a surgery they have put off....that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

📝 Some will be able to attend interviews after weeks without a job....that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

😷 Some will wear masks for weeks....that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

💅🏻 Some people will rush out to get the hair or nails done.... that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

❤️ The point is, everyone has different viewpoints/feelings and that’s okay. Be kind anyway.

We each have a different story. If you need to stay home, stay home. But be kind anyway.

If you need to go out, go. Just respect others when in public and be kind!

Don’t judge fellow humans because you’re not in their story.

We all are in different mental states than we were months ago. Be kind anyway.
