Between ages 8–13, girls typically begin the early stages of puberty, bringing a mix of excitement, confusion, and questions. Physical changes like breast development, body odor, and the start of periods often come with emotional shifts and new social dynamics.
It’s a key time to talk openly about body confidence, menstrual health, hygiene, and mental wellness. Some helpful ways to support your child include offering age-appropriate books about puberty, keeping an open-door policy for questions, helping her put together a period starter kit (pads, wipes, a pouch for school), and encouraging consistent hygiene habits like showering and using deodorant.
Common questions we hear from pre-teen girls at their well visits include:
When will I start my period?
Can I use tampons right away?
Why is my period irregular?
Why do my emotions change so much?
We’re also excited to share that Dr. Ransom Loftis, a gynecologist with a special interest in adolescent health, is now part of the team at Pirate Pediatrics. She’s uniquely equipped to guide families through these changes and provide support during this important stage of development.
If your pre-teen has questions—or you do—call our office today to schedule an appointment. We’re here to help you navigate puberty with confidence.
