At Pirate Pediatrics, mental health care is part of caring for the whole child, both mind and body.

There are two ways we can support your child’s mental health through Pirate Mind & Body.

Collaborative Care (skills-based, team approach)
Your pediatrician, child psychiatrist, and behavioral health care manager work together, with coordinated care that focuses on practical skills and strategies. This is evidence-based support delivered right here in our office.

Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
A licensed therapist helps your child process emotions, build coping skills, and grow through conversation and ongoing support.

Not sure which option fits your child best? Contact our office and our team will help you figure out the right next step.

Momma, you are doing a good job!

New motherhood is beautiful, but it can also be exhausting, overwhelming, and emotionally draining. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of self-awareness and strength.

Whether you need support with feeding, sleep, mental health, or simply a break to shower and eat, reaching out is part of caring for both yourself and your baby.

If you’re struggling or unsure where to start, call our office, we’re always here to support your postpartum journey.

If it feels like your toddler catches everything, you’re not imagining it.

Little immune systems are still learning, and toddlers are great at sharing germs especially in daycare or group settings. It’s normal for young children to have 8–12 viral illnesses a year, especially during fall and winter.

Colds can also seem “back-to-back” because viruses stack or symptoms overlap.

The good news? Each illness strengthens their immune system, and most are short-lived and resolve with rest, fluids, and time.

If your child’s illnesses seem unusually severe, frequent, or they’re not bouncing back as expected, call our office so we can help determine what’s normal and what deserves a closer look.

Is your child struggling to read?

Dyslexia is a common learning difference that affects how the brain processes written language, but it doesn’t reflect a child’s intelligence or effort.

Signs can include difficulty sounding out words, slow or labored reading, trouble with rhyming, mixing up letter order, or avoiding reading altogether.

Many children show early signs in kindergarten–2nd grade, but symptoms often become more noticeable as reading demands increase in later grades.

Early recognition is key, and with the right support, dyslexic learners thrive. Evidence-based interventions such as structured literacy programs like Orton-Gillingham, multi-sensory reading instruction, and targeted phonics support can significantly improve reading skills and help children build confidence.

If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about your child’s reading progress, we can guide you toward screening, resources, and school-based evaluations. Call Pirate Pediatrics to schedule an appointment.

If your teen is more tired than usual, it might not just be school stress. Low iron could be the culprit.

Iron deficiency is extremely common in teen girls due to growth, menstrual cycles, and busy schedules. Signs include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and trouble concentrating.

Good sources of iron include lean meats, beans, leafy greens, and iron-fortified cereals, and pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C helps absorption. In some cases, supplements may be recommended.

Think your teen might be anemic? Call today to schedule a quick screening. We can check iron levels and help get your teen back to feeling like themselves.

RSV can cause serious illness in infants, especially those under 6 months. This season, families have extra protection available with the RSV immunization.

Babies can receive the RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab), which helps reduce the risk of severe disease. Pregnant mothers may also receive a maternal RSV vaccine, which protects the baby after birth.

These RSV antibodies work much like the natural antibodies a mother passes to her baby during pregnancy offering protection before your baby’s own immune system is mature enough to fight infections on its own.

If you have questions about eligibility or scheduling RSV protection for your newborn or for you if you are expecting, call our office and we’ll walk you through the guidelines.

Red cheeks? It could be Fifth disease.

Fifth disease usually begins with a bright red “slapped-cheek” rash followed later by a lacy rash on the arms and body.

It’s caused by parvovirus B19 and spreads through respiratory droplets so kids typically catch it the same way they catch a cold.

Most people only get Fifth disease once in their lifetime because they develop immunity afterward. One important note: children are usually contagious 2–3 weeks before the rash appears, which means by the time you see the rash, they’re no longer spreading the virus.

If your child develops the rash, notify any pregnant person they may have been around during the contagious period, since additional precautions may be advised. Fifth disease can be harmful to the unborn fetus in a mom who is not immune to Fifth disease.

Call our office if your child has a fever lasting more than a few days or if you have questions about exposure during pregnancy.
