She spent her first 91 days fighting for her life in the NICU. Now, she walks back through those same doors each year, not as a patient, but as a reminder of what’s possible.

Abby Williford’s story is one of resilience, gratitude and full-circle moments. From a 2-pound preemie to a high school senior with plans to pursue medicine, her journey continues to inspire the team who once cared for her and the families walking that same path today.

Meet Sam Fulmer, 83-year-old tennis enthusiast, who began to have pain in his shoulder playing the game he loves. Fulmer turned to ECU Health Orthopedics for his reverse shoulder replacement and a seamless care journey from surgery to rehab.

“My daughter works with ECU Orthopedics and she recommended Dr. Yeazell. I was able to get seen by him quickly, which was a great selling point for me,” said Fulmer.

Thank you to ECU Health CEO Dr. Michael Waldrum for representing the health system in his testimony today before the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means on rural health care access and affordability. During his time on Capitol Hill, Dr. Waldrum urged federal policymakers to pursue targeted solutions that address rising health care costs and protect access to care for America’s rural communities.

“I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to testify before the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means to highlight the important, mission-driven work we do here at ECU Health, as well as the challenges we face as a rural safety net health system,” said Dr. Waldrum. “Access to affordable, high quality care should not depend on where someone lives. The challenges facing rural health systems are real and structural, and they require solutions that recognize the unique realities of rural communities.”
