ICYMI: Aletha Britt joined the team at Pitt Memorial Hospital in 1977 with hopes of becoming a nurse. Britt accepted the role as unit secretary in the post intensive care unit which gave her the opportunity to help people along the way.

Now, 48 years later, Britt has transitioned from unit secretary to medical secretary, nursing officer supervisor, and supervisor and educator for other unit secretaries. She currently has no plans of retirement with hopes to continue to serve the community. “It takes all of us to make this facility a great place to work. We all matter and make a difference, no matter how large or small the contribution,” said Britt.

ICYMI: The Penny Pinchers Health Grocery Store Tours, led by the Pitt Partners for Health Coalition, helps educate the community on how healthy eating can be affordable.

Through hands-on grocery store tours like Penny Pinchers and practical budgeting strategies, the program equips participants with the tools to make healthier choices without overspending. This program challenges and teaches participants how to shop smart and eat healthily on a tight budget of $15. "We want people to know they can eat healthily and still not spend a lot of money. It’s about teaching them how to get the most bang for their buck,” said De’Vette Thomas, community health improvement manager at ECU Health.

Karen Bolen, the director of inpatient clinical applications in the IS department of ECU Health, knew in high school that she wanted to be a nurse. After graduation she worked as a bedside nurse and charge nurse in emergency departments across West Virginia and Kentucky, and later serving as an ED manager.

What she didn’t expect was that a chance opportunity to beta test an electronic health record platform in the early 2000s would spark a new passion leading her from the bedside to the world of health care information technology.
