ICYMI: At ECU Health, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, co-led by a group of infectious diseases physicians and pharmacists, is working to address the threat of antimicrobial resistance in eastern North Carolina.

“What sets this team apart is not just how much they have accomplished, but how they do it with expertise, collaboration and unwavering commitment to always go above and beyond," said Nicole Nicolsen, manager of infectious diseases pharmacy and the program. "Their work optimizes patient outcomes today, preserves antimicrobial utility for tomorrow and firmly positions our system at the forefront of infectious diseases pharmacy and ASPs.”

ICYMI: Dannica Ashnault, an orthopedic surgery physician assistant (PA) who joined ECU Health in 2025, was trained as an Olympic-level skier, before stepping into medicine.

“My surgery was five or six weeks after the injury, and when I woke up in my room, the surgeon was in my room with my parents, telling me to get up," she said. "I had a whole team around me and supporting me so I could get back to what I loved to do. I wanted to be a part of that experience for someone else, and that got me interested in medicine.”

Dr. Christina Bowen, chief well-being officer at ECU Health, was recently highlighted by WNCT for her work with patients, families and team members across the health system.

"I just believe that's really important, that we see patients, we know their whole story when we're talking to them about their health and well-being," Dr. Bowen said. "I truly believe to get to care for patients and communities is sacred and I believe those of us that are in health care, clinical and non-clinical, this is a calling."

The annual ECU Health Hemophilia Treatment Center event, Blooms & Bytes, was a beautiful success! We were grateful for the opportunity to connect with patients, families, team members and partners to explore how technology, community and storytelling can support bleeding disorder care.

From hands-on topic tables to bouquet building and shared meals, Blooms & Bytes created space for connection, learning and support. Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, and made this event so special.

Tim Barnes, the clinical manager for radiation oncology, has spent 17 years with ECU Health, but health care wasn't always in his plan. Barnes started his career in law enforcement, but after a friend passed away, he felt called to the medical field.

“People hear I worked in homicide and say that’s such a big jump to treating patients,” Barnes said. “It is definitely different, but I’m still doing a job where I serve and help people, and really, that’s what matters at the end of the day.”

Thanks to a donation from David and Laura Brody and Hyman and Stacy Brody, the Brody Scholars Program is set to expand in the coming years. The program supports students at the Brody School of Medicine with full tuition, fees and enrichment opportunities for four years of medical education.

"Brody School of Medicine produces more doctors that stay in the state than any medical school in North Carolina, so (the Brody family) understands the value that we provide to the state and our communities," Dr. Michael Waldrum, CEO of ECU Health and dean of Brody School of Medicine.
