🎉 Staff Anniversary Luncheon Highlights! 🎉

This week we celebrated some of the incredible team members who have dedicated 3, 5, 10, and even 15 (!) years to The Woodlands at Furman!

Over a delicious meal and great conversation, we honored their hard work, their heart, and their lasting impact. Each honoree received a certificate recognizing their years of service and heartfelt thanks from a community that truly values them.

This kind of celebration is just one of the many ways we make sure our staff are seen, appreciated, and supported. It’s also part of why we were just named Best Place to Work and Best Locally-Owned Business in the 2025 Best of the Upstate Awards (not-so-humble brag).

When your workplace feels like home, and your coworkers feel like family, it’s easy to get up for work in the morning. And some of our honorees have been answering the call since we opened our doors in 2009.

Here’s to the people who make this place exceptional.

Behind the Curtain with Ronn Carroll 🎭

For over 50 years, Ronn Carroll lived and breathed the stage. From New York to London, in hits, flops, and everything in between, Ronn got to share the stage and backstage with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Now a proud member of The Woodlands community, Ronn recently welcomed fellow residents to a gallery celebrating his remarkable career, featuring posters from some of the many Broadway productions he brought to life.

With each tour through the exhibit, Ronn shared not just memories, but stories of triumphs, misadventures, famous co-stars, and the beautiful unpredictability of a life in the theater. Whether performing alongside legends like Ethel Merman, Cheeta Rivera, or Matthew Broderick, or finding humor in flops like The Best Little Wh******se Goes Public, Ronn’s reflections were full of honesty, heart, and humor.

As Ronn puts it: “Every show, good or bad, you end up with new friends. All I ever had to do for a living was act, and I was lucky that way.”

At The Woodlands, we believe that everyone has a story worth telling and that sharing those stories is what makes this community feel like home. We’re proud to create space for residents to share their passions, life experiences, and hard-won wisdom with one another. It’s what keeps our community thriving, connected, and full of life.

Bravo, Ronn. Take a bow! And thank you for both your endless wit and for reminding us what it means to do what you love.

Welcoming Our New Director of Wellness: Charmaine Seguro!
We are thrilled to officially welcome Charmaine Seguro as our new Director of Wellness here at The Woodlands! A former Second Lieutenant in the Air Force with a background in Exercise Science, Sports Nutrition, and medical studies, Charmaine brings over a decade of experience in fitness, teaching, and senior wellness.

In just a few short weeks, Charmaine has already made a positive impact, bringing brightness and energy to our community with creative and fun programs like kickboxing for residents (yes, really!). Charmaine is passionate about helping individuals of all ages and abilities build confidence through movement, and she’s committed to making wellness accessible, inclusive, and community-driven - exactly the goal we aim for here at the Woodlands.

Charmaine is excited to expand our wellness offerings and create more ways for residents to stay active in support of their everyday lives.

Fun facts about Charmaine: She loves Muay Thai, just started learning Jiu Jitsu, and enjoys hitting the trails on foot or by bike. Join us in giving Charmaine a warm Woodlands welcome! Marissa is sorely missed, but our Wellness department is in good hands.

Sunshine, Snacks, and a Little Friendly Competition ☀️🎉

Earlier this month, residents gathered in the Community Village for our Field Games Extravaganza led by Wellness Interns Riley Clark and Ava King, an afternoon full of laughter, movement, and fun! From classic yard games to team challenges, there was something for everyone to enjoy (plus plenty of snacks to keep the energy up).

Thank you to everyone who came out to play, and to Riley and Ava for bringing their energy and creativity to this spirited summer event!

After over four wonderful years as our Wellness Director, we bid a fond and bittersweet farewell to Marissa McFarland-Lachland, who is off to Denver to begin her next chapter with her husband, fellow long-time friend of the community and frequent musical collaborator, Chance.

In her time with us, Marissa has been a pillar of our Wellness team: leading exercise classes, advising residents through injuries and health challenges, and supporting all aspects of aging with care, compassion, and unmatched expertise. Her impact on the lives of our residents and staff is hard to put into words.

We celebrated her time with us on July 10 with an event fittingly titled "Adventure Awaits: A Farewell to Marissa," where the community came together to toast her contributions and share memories while wishing her well onto her next adventure.

Marissa, thank you for everything you've given to The Woodlands at Furman. Your warmth, knowledge, and spirit will be deeply missed, but we’re excited to see what adventures await you out West!

Please join us in wishing Marissa all the best as she begins this exciting new journey!

Woodlands Intern Spotlight Day 4 – Cross-Department Overview (Noah)

Not every internship fits neatly in a box: Noah Veneziano’s role gave him a full view of life at The Woodlands. From IT to Philanthropy, Finance to Lifestyles, he’s shadowed, brainstormed, and contributed across departments.

His big project? A “Woodlands Museum” concept where residents showcase their achievements, talents, and stories; a celebration of lives well lived.

Noah’s takeaway? “This was my first real professional experience. I learned how communities like this work and how I want to grow within them.”

We love an idea guy with a heart. 🔍🧠❤️

Woodlands Intern Spotlight Day 3 – IL Lifestyles (Anabelle)

Meet Anabelle Buxbaum, our incredible intern in Independent Living Lifestyles! With a double major in Music Performance and Religion, Anabelle brought heart, humor, and hustle to every project, from planning concerts to filming a travel vlog for our residents.

She’s been everywhere: orientation events, Club Berlam, inventory, resident meetings, you name it... and somehow she still manages to make time for the occasional violin performance.

What started as a summer internship might just be the start of a whole new career. As Anabelle puts it: “I didn’t realize how much I’d love this work. I want to explore it more.”

(Also… she loves Bethani. Who doesn’t? 🥹)

Woodlands Intern Spotlight Day 2 – Lifestyles in Assisted Living (Meg & Kayli)

When it comes to Lifestyles, Meg Dollar and Kayli Sessoms have gone all in: planning events, spending quality time with residents, and learning what it takes to build meaningful days.

Meg, a Public Health major, says the internship opened her eyes to the depth of memory care and what it really means to support someone through cognitive change. Kayli, a Health Sciences and Religion double major, dove into one-on-one conversations that honored each resident’s life story.

Both came in curious and now both are considering careers in aging services. Their compassion and drive are exactly what the next generation of care looks like.

Woodlands Intern Spotlight Day 1 – Wellness (Ava & Riley)

At The Woodlands, wellness isn’t just about fitness; it’s about connection, growth, and joy. This summer, we welcomed Ava King and Riley Clark, two Furman students who brought energy and fresh ideas to our Wellness Department.

From leading fitness classes and trivia nights to assisting with resident assessments, they’ve seen firsthand how wellness touches every part of our lives, especially as we age.

For Ava, who plans to go into family medicine, the personal relationships she’s built are laying a strong foundation for her future work across generations. And for Riley, who has his sights set on orthopedics, this experience has shown him how powerful movement can be at any age.

The residents adore them, and so do we! 💙
