Colon cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in North Carolina, but you are not defenseless. Screening can prevent many colon cancer deaths.

Starting at age 45, it’s important to get screened. Your risk is higher if you have a family history of colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Lifestyle factors—such as diet, physical activity, alcohol use, and smoking—also play a role.

Scheduling a colonoscopy gives you an advantage. It helps doctors find potential problems early, when they are more treatable.

Take a risk assessment or find location and scheduling information at ECUHealth.org/Reminder.

This year, ECU Health Medical Center is celebrating 75 years of serving eastern North Carolina. We're proud to honor our history while building our future, together. Take a look back to 1959 when C.D. Ward, Pitt County Memorial Hospital's first administrator, observed the construction of a three-story addition to the hospital.

We’ll be sharing moments like this all year long, and we’d love to hear your stories in the comments!

ECU Health and Maynard Children’s Hospital are elevating pediatric care with the addition of North Carolina’s first dedicated pediatric medical transport helicopter, helping bring care to children across eastern North Carolina.

“This is important, especially for rural health care,” said Erik Rispoli, the assistant manager of the Children’s Transport team. “Part of our Mission, Vision and Values is to be a model for rural health care in eastern North Carolina, to set the bar. By allowing people to receive care in their community hospitals but still provide specialty services they can get to quickly, it shows the commitment ECU Health and Maynard Children’s Hospital have to our communities.”
