This is a challenging time of year to train, but there are ways to adapt! Here are some tips for running in different seasons here in Greenville, SC. Thanks for the great question!

Wondering why your heart rate is so much higher in the summer? Here’s a little physiology lesson:
Heat = More Work: Your body diverts blood to the skin to cool off, so your heart pumps faster to maintain performance.
Humidity makes it worse: Greenville’s humidity limits sweat evaporation, which is your main cooling system.
Dehydration compounds it: Less plasma volume = higher HR for the same effort.

This post is pretty personal, but I hope some of my experiences can serve as a reminder of what healthy running is, or allow people to avoid making the same mistakes I made.

There are a few things I regret from college, but it’s also allowed me to empathize with other women more deeply and help athletes who I treat now in my practice.
