Robin Adams, 70, received an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis. With early detection, a clear treatment plan and a team that moved swiftly, she faced it head-on. From immediate consultations to a timely lumpectomy and chemotherapy, Robin's journey exemplifies the power of proactive care.

“It was so impressive to have the surgeon, the oncologist and the radiologist immediately conferring about my case. When I met with them, they all gave me their plan so I could see clearly what they were going to do,” said Adams. “They explained how everything would progress, so I really didn’t have any questions.”

The speed of her journey was not by accident. It was the result of Prisma Health’s clinical operating system, called the Pulse Program, which integrates quality, safety, experience, health disparities, value and population health improvement into one learning system.

“We understand that the diagnosis of cancer is frightening,” said Robin’s medical oncologist, Carla Jorgensen, MD. “It is more frightening when you are not aware of the stage and treatment plan. We strive to have patients seen quickly through our multidisciplinary clinic, which brings together all the specialties to confer on the most comprehensive plan.”

Elliott Anderson-Cain’s pediatrician called one weekend after receiving abnormal bloodwork and referred him to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital, where he was later admitted to the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit. There they met Dr. Aniket Saha, who expertly and compassionately explained to the family that Elliott was diagnosed with leukemia at just 3 years old. Dr. Saha and the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology team became an integral support system as long treatment days and frequent hospitalizations became part of Elliott’s daily life.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better, more knowledgeable and caring team,” they explained. “Knowing that Dr. Saha had Elliott’s best interest at heart gave us confidence so we could focus on being there for our son.”

Despite following the standard treatment protocol, Elliott’s cancer persisted after four months of chemotherapy. After exhausting available options, Dr. Saha developed a treatment plan for Elliott, which included experimental drug therapy. The treatment ultimately reduced the cancer cells, which allowed Elliott to receive a stem cell transplant later that year.

While Elliott is now in remission, he continues to receive dedicated care for graft-versus-host disease due to the transplant. His parents say that amid ongoing care, the compassion and expertise of the Prisma Pediatric Hematology/Oncology team have been a constant support.

During each September, Prisma Health recognizes the bravery of patients and families just like Elliott. Elliott’s parents reflect on the experience, saying: “It’s the people—the entire team of people—at Prisma who make the difference: oncology, surgery, pharmacy, social workers, clinic and hospital staff. Their kindness and competence gave us confidence and hope.”

Child Passenger Safety Week is September 21-27. Car seat safety is one of the top priorities for both new parents and old pros alike, but the rise in counterfeit car seats has led to concerns about how caregivers can ensure they are using a safe and approved car seat, so their children are traveling safely in the back seat.

Injury Prevention Special Project Coordinator Camila Perez with the Bradshaw Institute for Community Child Health & Advocacy spoke with us about counterfeit car seats and what parents should watch for. https://bit.ly/4pntfwy

Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Greenville opened its new, expanded pediatric cancer and blood disorders unit on Tuesday, Aug. 12 thanks to overwhelming support from local groups and generous community members, the nationally recognized nonprofit Hogs for the Cause and the South Carolina state legislature.

The $7.5 million space is named the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital—Upstate Hogs for the Cause Pediatric Hematology Oncology Unit. Hogs for the Cause is a New Orleans-based nonprofit organization that has ties to South Carolina and is dedicated to supporting families affected by pediatric brain cancer.

This state-of-the-art unit will provide care for children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. Tailored with invaluable family input, this new 7,580 sq ft expansion features bright and comforting spaces—nine inpatient rooms, work desks for parents, a dedicated respite room, an expanded playroom, and an end‑of‑life suite to support families during the most challenging times.

“I’m thrilled that we can take this next leap forward by creating a space that is literally custom built for and by families,” said Dr. Aniket Saha, the unit’s medical director. “Every part of this unit was purpose-built to bring comfort, hope and healing to children and their families. This thoughtfully designed space will better blend family care with clinical care, helping reduce stress and offering a positive healing environment that nourishes the mind, body and soul.”

Named in honor of generous support from Hogs for the Cause, this child‑centered healing space brings world‑class care and compassion to kids in the Upstate. https://bit.ly/4lm7kCD
