When COVID-19 shut down the world in 2020, Dr. Chris Lacroix—a primary care physician in Greenville, NC—went from treating patients to fighting for his life in just six months.
After a long road, Dr. Lacroix became the first known amyloidosis patient to receive a heart transplant at UNC-Chapel Hill.
💚 His donor gave him more than a second chance—they gave him the ability to walk, work, and watch his son’s baseball games again.
Now, nearly four years post-transplant, Dr. Lacroix is back to caring for patients—with a deeper empathy and a “Jaguar for a heart.”

How long have you been a nurse?
I have been practicing as a Family Nurse Practitioner in family medicine for 4 years.

What inspired you to be a nurse?
My passion for helping and serving others, which started at a young age, inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare.

What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with family—especially mommy-daughter dates—as well as painting, traveling, and giving back to the community through health fairs and service events.

What inspired you to be a nurse?

I find it deeply rewarding to support and uplift others, whether that is being a present and engaged mom to my daughter, a dependable friend or a medical professional, who helps my patients feel empowered and capable of being the best version of themselves

How long have you been a nurse?

I have been a nurse since 2005 when I earned my associate degree in nursing in my hometown of Washington, I later advanced my education by completing my bachelor of science in nursing from East Carolina University, where I was proud to become part of the pirate family. I have been blessed in my career to work in a variety of settings and areas, including cardiac ICU, hospice, management and marketing. The people and experiences have been priceless.

What about nursing is rewarding for you?

What inspired me to become a nurse was the opportunity to make a real impact in people’s lives, especially during their most vulnerable moments. I’ve always been drawn to both the human connection and the critical thinking that nursing requires. It’s a career that allows me to lead with compassion while continuously learning and growing.

What do you do in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with the people I cherish most. I have an 11 year-old daughter that is equal part sweet and spicy,who loves shopping more than anything!! My favorite moments are with close friends and family at the beach or traveling to explore new places, I value experiences that bring joy and meaningful relationships.
