In 2022, the state reported 1,679 deaths from Alzheimer's, yielding a death rate of 48.5 per 100,000 people—the highest in the nation. Since 2016, Mississippi has led the country in this statistic every year except 2018 .

Several factors contribute to Mississippi's high Alzheimer's death rate:

💚Chronic Health Conditions: High rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease in the state are linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's.

💙Healthcare Access and Quality: Limited access to quality healthcare and preventive services can delay diagnosis and treatment.

💚Socioeconomic Factors: Higher poverty rates, lower education levels, and systemic health disparities disproportionately affect Black and Hispanic populations, elevating Alzheimer's risk .

💙Diet and Lifestyle: The prevalent Southern diet, characterized by high sugar and sodium intake, along with sedentary lifestyles, particularly among women over 65, exacerbate health risks associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Addressing these issues through improved healthcare access, public health initiatives, and lifestyle interventions is crucial to reducing Alzheimer's mortality in Mississippi
