📚✏️ Back-to-School & Breastfeeding: Tips for Teacher-Mamas 🍼🤱🏽

Heading back to the classroom while maintaining your milk supply can feel overwhelming but you can do this! Here are some ways to set yourself up for success:

1️⃣ Know Your Rights — Federal law protects your right to reasonable break time and a private (non-bathroom) space for pumping. Review your district’s policies before school starts.

2️⃣ Talk to Your Admin — Share your pumping schedule ahead of time so coverage can be arranged. Having allies on your team makes all the difference.

3️⃣ Plan Your Schedule — Aim for pumping sessions around the same time you would feed your baby. Even short 15-minute sessions help maintain supply.

4️⃣ Double Up Supplies — Keep an extra set of pump parts at school so you’re never stuck if you forget something.

5️⃣ Stay Organized — A small cooler bag, ice packs, and labeled storage bags keep milk safe until you get home.

6️⃣ Give Yourself Grace — Teaching is demanding. Even if pumping at work isn’t perfect every day, you’re still nourishing your baby with love and care.

💬 If you’re a teacher who’s pumping, drop your favorite time-saving hack below so other mamas can benefit!

I woke up this morning with one of our Crepe Myrtle’s split in half and it got me thinking about severe weather. I know especially in the Carolinas we were significantly impacted by hurricane Helene and many people are still feeling the effects and emotions of it.
When extreme weather hits it can cause power outages which can be stressful, especially when you have stored breastmilk to protect. Here’s how to keep your milk safe:

✅ Breastmilk can be safely stored at room temperature for 4–6 hours
✅ Store in an insulated bag or cooler with ice packs for up to 24 hours
✅ If frozen milk begins to thaw during a power outage, you can refreeze it as long as ice crystals are still present

💛 Honoring the Hands That Hold Us 💛

This Father’s Day, we celebrate the quiet strength, the middle-of-the-night diaper changes, the skin-to-skin snuggles, and the unwavering support that fathers and father figures provide in the postpartum journey.

At Milk and Honey Breastfeeding, we know that the fourth trimester is a family affair. Here’s to the dads who hold space, hold babies, and hold their partners with love and care.

Whether you’re bottle-feeding, chestfeeding, or supporting someone who is—your presence matters more than words can say.

🌩️ with storms starting to ramp up, let’s be ready!
If you’re breastfeeding or storing milk, a little preparation can go a long way during a power outage.

🍼 Keep milk in the back of the freezer
🧊 Use ice packs or coolers if needed
✋ Learn how to express milk by hand
💡 And remember: milk that hasn’t fully thawed can be refrozen.

You’ve got this—and I’m here to help. 💛

Notice Regarding Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance

Dear Patients,

I want to inform you of an important change regarding insurance coverage for lactation services. Effective immediately for new patients, and beginning May 16, 2025, for current patients, I will no longer be able to accept Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance plans.

Unfortunately, outpatient International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are not permitted to contract directly with Blue Cross Blue Shield. For some time, I worked with a third-party billing company to help patients access their benefits. However, due to ongoing and unpredictable reimbursement issues with Blue Cross Blue Shield, that company is no longer able to support claims to them.

I understand that this may be frustrating, and I remain committed to making lactation care accessible. I am happy to provide a detailed superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions—I’m here to support you in navigating your options.

Thank you for your understanding and continued trust.

Warmly,
Sarah O’Rourke, IBCLC

ATTN South Carolina IBCLCs & Birth Workers!
We need your voice.

Blue Cross Blue Shield—and other insurers in our state—are consistently denying or failing to reimburse for lactation care that is legally required under the Affordable Care Act. As a result, families are being denied essential breastfeeding support, and providers like us are being forced to absorb the cost or stop taking insurance altogether.

I’m drafting a letter to our state representatives calling for:
• Stronger enforcement of insurance mandates
• Reimbursement protections for IBCLCs
• Accountability for companies skirting the law

If you’re a South Carolina-based IBCLC, doula, midwife, or other perinatal professional and want to sign on, DM me or drop a comment and I’ll share the link.

Let’s show legislators that this isn’t just one person’s problem—it’s a public health crisis.
