The James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center is a special place where sick or injured children and their families find healing and support in a state-of-the-art environment. It is part of ECU Health Medical Center, the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and tertiary care center for 1.4 million people living in ECU Health’s 29-county service area. In addition to Maynard Children’s Hospital outpatient volumes, the ECU Health pediatric outpatient center receives nearly 60,000 patient visits annually, which includes general pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties. Maynard Children’s Hospital and the Brody School of Medicine are members of the Children’s Hospital Association, National Children’s Study, and the Children’s Oncology Group, which enables us to compare the care we provide to other children’s hospitals across the country. The promise to ensure the best possible future for children in eastern North Carolina drove the creation of this 78,000-square-foot addition offering additional pediatric services. A key focus in the design of this project was to provide an environment conducive to patient- and family-centered care. This philosophy reflects the staff’s commitment to providing care that is tailored to the needs of children. It has been a guiding force behind pediatric care at ECU Health Medical Center for many years. TERMS OF USE

Fighting cancer for the third time, Carlos continues to show up with kindness and a sense of humor that lights up the entire unit. When he learned his cancer had returned, he told everyone he would “beat it again.”

Even on the hardest days, he faces each moment with remarkable bravery. After counting down the days, and even the hours, his Little Wish finally arrived.

With his new PlayStation gear, Carlos now has a way to keep playing through both the good days and the hard ones, with the Maynard Children’s Hospital team behind him, cheering him on.

We are of the nurses at Maynard Children’s Hospital for their continued commitment to excellence in patient care.

Among nurses at ECU Health Medical Center, the Children’s and Women’s Operational Pool, Labor and Delivery, Pediatric units, and our Transport team, were recognized among those with the most certified and newly certified team members.

This dedication to professional growth reflects the high standard of care our nurses provide to children and families across eastern North Carolina every day.

Nearly 11 years ago, Laura Nelms was admitted to ECU Health Women’s Care with severe preeclampsia. Within hours, she was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome and, after a week of treatment, delivered her daughter, Camdyn Grace Nelms, on Oct. 16, 2014.

During their NICU stay, Laura remembers the kindness of the nurses. “They wrote love messages on her boards, left us little gifts like hats and called when we had to step away,” she said. “I’ll never forget being given a tour of the Ronald McDonald House and being offered food and a moment of rest when we needed it most.”

Today, Camdyn is thriving. She is a dancer, soccer player, dedicated student and, as her mom proudly shared, “one of the kindest kids you could ever meet.”

Stories like Camdyn’s highlight the lasting impact of the incredible patient care provided at the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center. Share your story with us at gratitude@ecuhealth.org.

We were proud to join local organizations for the 16th annual Operation Medicine Drop, where community members safely disposed of 244 pounds of unused, unwanted or expired medication.

Ellen Walston, injury prevention program coordinator and Safe Kids Pitt County coordinator at ECU Health, said the event is essential to keep those medications out of the hands of small children.

Dedicated Space to Support Our Youngest Patients

When we opened our doors in 2013, we made a promise to the 29 counties we serve across eastern North Carolina — to ensure the best possible future for our children. Child-focused, family-centered care for our youngest patients is how we deliver on that promise.

Designed to ease young minds

Every inch of our 78,000-square-foot facility was designed with children’s needs in mind. Beyond the shape of the building itself and the ocean theme throughout, the following features are just a few of the innovative ways we help reduce children’s anxieties and keep families close together:
