What a great way to include the kids in our community who have a hard time communicating!! π
Check out our new play communication board placed at our Town Common inclusive playground! This board was funded by the ECU chapter of the National Speech Language Hearing Association and was designed by ECU NSSLHAβs chapter President Lena Nazzal. The board was created to provide a way for everyone to communicate by using pictures/symbols, as well as a full alphabet and numbers in both English and Spanish.
Some individuals may be nonverbal or may have difficulty communicating, and use other forms of communication like this to express their wants/needs, feelings, thoughts, etc...Ways this can be used include pointing to pictures to tell someone how happy you are to be at the park, telling a caregiver you would like to go on the zipline, or asking a friend to play with you on the slide. This board is designed to decrease language barriers for individuals with different abilities, raise awareness about different communication modalities, and promote inclusion for all.
