Dr. Carol Bouzoukis is a child psychotherapist, specializing in drama and play therapy. She is known by satisfied parents as “The Child Whisperer”.

She has over twenty years of clinical experience, having worked for regional hospitals, child advocacy agencies, and children’s mental health facilities. Dr. Bouzoukis has provided successful treatment and help for:

Dr. Bouzoukis is an expert in both individual psychotherapy for children. Dr. Bouzoukis is an internationally recognized author. Her books Pediatric Dramatherapy: They Couldn’t Run, So They Learned To Fly and Encouraging Your Child's Imagination: A Guide and Stories for Play Acting are available on Amazon.com. Dr. Bouzoukis has a doctorate from New York University with an emphasis in Child Dramatherapy and a Master of Fine Arts in Child Drama from The University of North Carolina – Greensboro. She has been a Nationally Registered Drama Therapist since 1987. Dr. Bouzoukis is a member of The Association for Play Therapy, The American Psychological Association, The National Association of Drama Therapy, The Society for Arts in Healthcare, The Alliance for Theatre in Education and The International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People. Dr. Carol Bouzoukis is also the Founder and Executive Director of Child Drama Workshops, a professional theater arts enrichment program for children grades pre-K through 5th grade. Established in 1994, Child Drama Workshops encourages artistic and educational achievement for young people through participatory drama and theatre experiences. Dr. Bouzoukis specializes in creating a non threatening and safe atmosphere that allows children to express themselves through their natural ability to pretend. Children can very often regain control of their world with the help of drama/play therapy.

As parents, it’s easy to fall into the trap of labeling our children based on their behavior—“the troublemaker,” “the shy one,” “the stubborn child.” But these labels not only limit how we see them, they limit how they see themselves.

When we label a child, we risk defining them by a single moment or trait, rather than understanding the full complexity of their needs and potential. Reframing behavior is about recognizing that actions don’t define a child’s identity. Instead of labeling, we can focus on the why behind their actions—what are they trying to communicate? What are they feeling or needing in that moment?

By shifting our perspective, we allow children to grow beyond labels and reinforce their capacity for change and development. This mindset helps them feel seen for who they truly are, not just for how they behave in a given situation.

Parenting is a journey—let’s give our children the space to evolve without the constraints of labels.
