Greenville Birth: Julie Byers, Doula and Educator Positive information about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting from Julie Byers Doula Services and Childbirth Education in Upstate SC. I love okra pickles.

I’m a doula and educator serving the upstate region of SC (Greenville, Anderson, Seneca, Pickens, and Spartanburg). I offer group and private classes including Mindful Birth, Blissborn Hypnosis Class, Epidural Prep Classes, and Baby Blueprint parenting prep. My births taught me to trust my body and to overcome fear. They taught me to own my decisions and to be courageous. Your birth is your own an

d I’m there to support you in your decisions. The best birth is one in which you feel respected, supported, and heard. I support birthing families who desire:

* natural birth
* planned cesarean
* medicated birth
* homebirth
* hospital birth

I’m committed to inclusive, respectful care to birthing persons and families of all ethnicities, sexual orientations, identities, and spiritual beliefs. Contact me for current availability and to schedule a free consult. Now the IMPORTANT STUFF:

I think tacos are God’s gift to the world. I can (and regularly do) eat 13 at a time. When I lived in NY, I had the Mt. Olive Pickle Company ship a case to me. My special talent is finding four-leaf clovers. It’s not an especially helpful talent and no, I’m not particularly lucky. Still, if you see me walking across a patch of clover, you can bet I’m scanning the ground. I own a sleek sea kayak named Betsy. We need more time together. When I read aloud to the kids, I usually cry. The girls just roll their eyes. I loathe typos. If you find one on my website and tell me about it, I’ll send you a virtual hug. Growing up, I wanted to be a surgeon in the Congo. I was second-year pre-med before I realized how much I hated precision. I switched to English Literature and got lost in poetry. I think doula work is a lot like poetry.

Happiest one year to these beautiful first time parents. And to their doula dogs, Cash and Zeppelin 🐾

This birth was so interesting. Mom experienced an early urge to push at 4cm. Contractions were intense and close. I suspected a posterior baby and so began the techniques to try to spin the baby.

But the more I intervened, the more contractions spaced out. At 8cm, her contractions were every 13-15 minutes apart. And she still had an unstoppable pushing urge.

Until on one of those spaced out contractions, she said, “Something’s coming out!”

And she was right, of course! Baby was born into her partner’s hands 💕

And happiest birthday to these precious clients who welcomed their third baby boy!

Yes, it was a double header for this doula 🤪

I loved the sweet emotions during the birth. The feeling of gratitude, the mom singing, the trust.

Happiest one year birthday to this amazing first time couple!

They had a rare birth experience: pushing was longer than active labor. 🙃

A midwife, doula, and nurse with decades of experience used every trick we knew to get this kid out.

And maybe in the end, it was the car ride to the hospital? The long walk to labor and delivery? But baby decided to join the party 🥳

Happiest one year birthday to these strong first time parents!

When they called me to come to their birth, I expected to walk into early active labor.

Instead I walked into transition!

And quickly got their midwife on the way 🚗🔥

Baby girl was soon earthside. Welcome little one 💕

Happiest one year birthday to this darling first time couple! They were so prepared for their birthing day and worked together so well 🥰

This was a rare 9-5 workday for me! When I arrived, they were well into active labor. We soon headed to the hospital where pushing quickly followed.

A cervical lip was holding up progress so I offered some dirty doula tricks. This client was willing to do the hard things (after a snack break, of course!) and soon she was pushing in earnest.

She gave birth standing to the song “Defying Gravity” 💪

Happiest first year to the winner of the best labor poker face!

When I arrived, I could not tell when this client was contracting. She was watching her older child play and the whole scene was so chill. I honestly thought I might be going back home soon.

But when big sis went to bed and my client stood up, I could see “ok, she’s having contractions.”

It still didn’t feel urgent. It didn’t feel fast. But I knew she wanted an epidural so we headed to the hospital.

I called ahead and let the midwife know she wanted an epidural as soon as she could get one.

She was 6cm when we arrived. Nurse Tessa got her IV placed and called anesthesia.

And then…her water broke…she was pushing…and a baby was born!

We were only at the hospital for 30 minutes.

Oops.

Postpartum.
No longer a celebrity, pregnant lady, expectant.
It has happened; you are here,
each dram you drain a step away
from flushed and floating, lush and curled.
Now you are the pink one, the movie star.
It has happened. You are here,

and you sing, mewl, holler, peep,
swallow the light and bubble it back,
shine, contain multitudes, gleam. You

are the new one, the movie star,
and birth is like jazz

Happiest birthday to a precious family who welcomed baby boy #3 one year ago!

It isn’t often that I’m able to take a last minute client. But when I can, I know it will be serendipity. 💫✨🌟

This client had never had an unmedicated birth and she was (pretty sure) she wanted to give it a go. After her water broke, I came over with some doula tricks at noon to get labor going. There were no contractions yet but I decided to stay close by just in case.

1:30pm: Her husband needed to pick the kids up from school and drop them off at a friend’s. Contractions had just started so I came over to stay with her while he did pick up.

I began to wonder if we could wait for him to get back. Things were escalating quickly.

I texted the OB that we were coming in hot!

2:34: We pulled up to the hospital. I ran with the client who was on her knees backwards in the wheelchair. “I need to poooooop!”

2:40: She gave birth standing in the bathroom.

The dad gave me a high five. The OB said “That was SO FUN!” And my client said she felt amazing!

OB: Kelly Kline
Nurses: Ashley, Maggie, and Michele. Special shout-out to Ashley Adams for so thoroughly cleaning the tennis shoes mom was wearing!
