This sweet 1-year-old Goldendoodle, Bunny, recently visited our ER for vomiting. An abdominal ultrasound performed by our criticalist, Dr. Amanda Kuhl, revealed foreign material in her stomach — a belly full of leaves! 🍁🐶

Our surgeon, Dr. Erin Baysinger, performed surgery to remove them. Bunny is now recovering well and already feeling better! 💛

She’s pictured here with Dr. Kuhl, Dr. Baysinger, and Mickey — part of the team who helped her through it.

Dachshund overload! ❤️

Meet Willie, Millie, Lylla and Chewy — four brave pups who are just 2 weeks post-op from their hemilaminectomy surgeries with our neurologist, Dr. Rennie Waldron.

Dachshunds are known for their adorable long backs — but that unique shape also puts them at higher risk for spinal issues. They need a little extra TLC when it comes to protecting their spines.

Here are a couple ways to help keep your dachshund’s back healthy:

🐾 Use pet ramps or steps to avoid jumping on/off furniture
🐾 Keep them at a healthy weight to reduce strain on the spine
🐾 Support their back when picking them up — one hand under the chest, one under the hind end

All four of them are making great strides in their recovery — way to go, little warriors! ❤️

Meet Grady 💙 This sweet boy came to see Dr. Kuhl, our critical care specialist, after experiencing a rare case of anaphylactic shock following his vaccines. Thanks to prompt treatment and the quick action of our team, Grady was stabilized and recovered well.

What makes Grady even more special is that he’s deaf—and incredibly smart. His loving family has taught him sign language, and he knows over 40 different signs!

As we begin Deaf Dog Awareness Week, we’re honored to share Grady’s story and highlight the incredible capabilities of deaf dogs. With patience, love, and communication, they can thrive just like any other pup.

We’re so grateful to Grady’s family for trusting us with his care and for being amazing advocates for deaf dogs everywhere. 🐾

Doctor Spotlight: Dr. Amanda Kuhl 🩺

We’re thrilled to highlight one of our amazing team members — Dr. Amanda Kuhl, our board-certified Criticalist!

Originally from a small town in Southern Illinois, Dr. Kuhl began her academic journey with a double major in Biology and Chemistry at Greenville College in Illinois. She went on to earn her DVM from the University of Illinois, then completed a small animal rotating internship at BluePearl in Overland Park, Kansas.

Her passion for emergency and critical care led her back to the University of Illinois for a specialized ECC internship, followed by a competitive ECC residency at the University of Tennessee. She became board-certified in 2021 and fell in love with the South, eventually making her home here in Greenville. 💚

She met her boyfriend Patrick in 2023 and shares her life with two adorable cats, Birdie and Bogey. When she’s not saving lives, Dr. Kuhl enjoys video games, books, movies, and traveling with Patrick. We’re so lucky to have her passion and expertise on our team!

Maple, a sweet pup, was in the care of our ECC department for a week after her veterinarian noted a severe liver and kidney injury. She had become acutely sick at home, and her family noticed she was turning yellow — a sign something was seriously wrong. They brought her to their primary veterinarian right away.

Her veterinarian quickly recognized the severity of Maple’s condition and began initial treatment. She was ultimately diagnosed with leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection that can be transmitted through contaminated water, infected wildlife, or contact with the urine of infected animals — and it can be passed to humans as well.

After her diagnosis, Maple was transferred to our ICU for continued care. Our ECC team provided intensive monitoring, IV fluids, antibiotics, and supportive treatment around the clock for a full week.

Thanks to the fast action of her family, the early intervention by her veterinarian, and the dedicated care she received at our hospital, Maple made a full recovery. We’re thrilled to report she’s now back home and feeling like her happy self again! 💛🐶

Honoring 9/11 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the heroes who rose in the face of unimaginable tragedy on September 11, 2001.

We also honor the brave service animals—especially the search and rescue dogs—who worked alongside first responders with unwavering courage and loyalty. Their silent heroism made a lasting impact and will never be forgotten. ❤️🐾
