This week, the Communications and Promotions team took a field trip to Wildwood Park for a day focused on team building, hands-on learning, and creative content development.
We kicked off the day with lunch at the park, creating space to connect outside of the office and strengthen our collaboration as a team. From there, we dove into photography training—learning about lighting, composition, and visual storytelling techniques that will directly support our upcoming projects and campaigns.
It was a valuable opportunity for our team to grow both professionally and creatively. We left with fresh ideas, meaningful connections, and a renewed sense of excitement for the work ahead.

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Dr. Richard R. (Dick) Eakin, for whom our building is proudly named after.

Dr. Eakin, 86, passed away on June 2, 2025. Dr. Eakin’s legacy as an educator, leader, and student advocate has left an indelible mark on our department and the entire East Carolina University community. From his early days in Pennsylvania to his distinguished tenure as Chancellor of ECU, Dr. Eakin’s commitment to education and service was unwavering. He was a pioneer in spearheading the building of the (now named) Eakin Student Recreation Center. Even after his retirement, he continued to support and guide our university in numerous roles.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Jo, his children, grandchildren, and all who knew and loved him. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial services. Those wishing to honor Dr. Eakin’s memory are encouraged to contribute to the Honors College at East Carolina University.

We are grateful for Dr. Eakin’s vision and leadership, which continue to inspire us every day.

Monday, April 28th, we hosted the Nance Mize Student Staff Appreciation Banquet where we recognized all our graduating seniors, 1 employee from each area who was recognized as the Commander of the Year, and the overall student employee of the year, Captain of the Ship. Congratulations to all our students! Job well done!
