The ONS Foundation for Clinical Research and Education is proud to be part of another published study advancing patient care. 🥼
ONSF contributed to a multicenter study examining treatment of recurrent Dupuytren’s contracture after prior successful surgery using collagenase enzyme injections to break down abnormal Dupuytren’s tissue without requiring revision surgery.
As part of this work, Dr. Mark Vitale, representing ONSF, collaborated with nine other centers across the country to perform a retrospective analysis of 144 joints in 101 patients with recurrent contractures after initially successful surgical treatment.
Baseline contractures measured on average 52 degrees before injection with collagenase, and there was a mean improvement of 38 degrees after injection. Adverse events were minimal, with 19% of patients developing skin tears that all resolved and one flexor tendon injury that did not require secondary surgery.
The authors concluded that collagenase is an effected and well-tolerated nonsurgical option for recurrent postsurgical contractures, with results comparable to patients without prior surgery.
