Hey all, I just wanted to drop a note about who we are and what we do.

We offer services focused on helping children and families begin to heal from the impacts of trauma, through specific recommendations for therapeutic, educational, and enrichment activities that match the needs and strengths of the individual child or youth. Our expertise in understanding trauma-informed care allows us to provide education and support to families and other important individuals in the child/youth’s life.

This includes the following counties: Adams; Arapahoe; Denver; Douglas and Jefferson.

Cornerstone’s Community Counseling Services program is led by our Clinical Director, Kirk Ward,
LCSW, and ChildTrauma Academy Fellow. Kirk brings with him over 35 years of experience, working
in child and adolescent mental health and trauma. He trains our staff in the Neurosequential Model
of TherapeuticsTM, a trauma-informed approach developed by Dr. Bruce Perry, as well as other models.

Cornerstone Programs Community Counseling Services credentials include: Licensed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as a Behavioral Health Entity; Medicaid Provider - Colorado Access and Colorado Community Health Alliance (CCHA); CHP+ Provider - Colorado Access; and Contracted with Signal Behavioral Health for Child and Youth Mental Health Treatment Act (CYMHTA) services.

Everyone has negative self-talk to some degree. The issue arises when our negative self-talk starts to create outcomes in our lives that we do not want to happen. For example, they prevent us from pursuing something we want. The key to mitigating negative self-talk to a level we can control is to know how it works. Here are some very helpful examples of different types of negative self-talk. The goal is to be able to recognize it when you are doing it, identify which type you are doing, and then to actively mitigate it. Has negative self-talk had an impact on your life? How did you learn to control it and manage it so it didn't affect your life in a negative way? Please share! Thanks all!

Sometimes, when we are struggling, we get very focused on the negative things in our life at the cost of not seeing the positive. It is very difficult to pull out of this mindset because it is self-reinforcing: I see negative things -> I feel upset; I feel upset -> I see negative things. Sometimes, a simple adjustment, like a daily goal of naming 3-5 positive things that happened to you can help you shift out of that negative cycle. Give it a try for a week and let us know how it goes!

The key to managing your mental health in a productive way is self-awareness. Being aware that what you are thinking about or feeling is either not connected to reality; or, if it is, your response to it is creating negative or destructive outcomes that you didn't want to happen. Self-awareness is the key to either you managing your mental health, or your mental health managing you.

I was looking through the reasons so many celebrities and athletes have committed su***de over the years on this last day of Su***de Prevention month and I was overwhelmed on how many had diagnosed mental health issues. So many of these needless deaths could have been prevented by some help and mental health support. My hope is that we can all work together to help lessen the needless deaths of people who are losing their mental health battles.
