Gaslighting is common in active addiction.
When behavior is exposed, shame and defense mechanisms activate. The result can leave partners questioning their memory and judgment.
If conversations consistently leave you confused, addiction may be distorting reality.
Valiant Living’s structured men’s program removes secrecy and restores accountability.

For many people struggling with po*******hy, the issue is not simply about s*x.

Often it is about regulation.

In this clip from our newest podcast episode, therapist Tyler Flowers explains how po*******hy can become a way to cope with emotional dysregulation. When someone feels overwhelmed, anxious, or unsafe internally, the brain searches for something that will quickly relieve that tension.

Understanding this helps move the conversation beyond shame and toward the deeper work of healing.

One helpful way to understand addiction is this:

Addiction is often an illegitimate search for the fulfillment of legitimate needs.

When someone turns to po*******hy, the deeper issue is rarely just the behavior itself. Often it is an attempt to meet very real human needs like connection, comfort, or relief from stress.

In this clip from our newest podcast episode, therapist Tyler Flowers talks about how recovery begins when someone starts looking beneath the behavior and asking what they are truly needing.

Po*******hy addiction is one of the most hidden struggles many people face.

Because of the shame surrounding it, many people suffer in silence and many partners are left confused and hurt without language to understand what is happening.

We created a free guide called The Hidden Battle to help bring clarity to this issue.

The guide explains:
• how po*******hy affects the brain
• why people often reach for it during stress or emotional dysregulation
• the cycle of secrecy and shame
• what the first steps toward healing can look like

If you or someone you love is trying to understand this issue better, this resource may help.

What happens when the brain gets the reward without the effort?

Dopamine was designed to motivate us toward meaningful action. Work toward something → experience the reward.

But when rewards become instant and effortless, the brain starts adapting in ways that can lead to compulsive behaviors.

In this clip from our newest podcast episode, therapist Tyler Flowers explains how po*******hy and other “cheap dopamine” habits can begin to shape the way we think, act, and regulate our impulses.

The full episode explores the deeper connection between dopamine, compulsive behavior, and recovery.

At the APSATS conference we had the opportunity to connect with the team from Lit Path, a nonprofit dedicated to making therapy more accessible.

Lit Path provides $65 therapy scholarships per session, paid directly to therapists, helping clients who are ready to do the work of healing but need help covering the cost.

Their model ensures therapists are fairly compensated while making therapy more accessible to people who might otherwise go without care.

They also partner with treatment programs to create branded scholarship funds, allowing alumni and supporters to give back and help others begin their recovery journey.

Lit Path is also hosting the upcoming Hope for Healing Conference June 25–27 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where clinicians, coaches, partners, and individuals seeking recovery resources will gather for training, connection, and community.

Valiant Living will be presenting a workshop during the event.

March is a season of transition.

Not quite winter. Not fully spring.

On this week’s hike we experienced both. Snow and cold still lingering. Sun warming the trail and new life beginning to emerge.

The climb was challenging, but the most meaningful moments happened when we stopped. Resting, reflecting, and talking honestly about the challenges and victories of recovery.

At Valiant Living, nature is part of the healing process. When men step outside together, something shifts. Conversations deepen. Perspective widens.

Sometimes the best classroom is the trail.

Recovery is not just about stopping a behavior.

It is about learning how to connect.

In our new podcast episode, therapist Tyler Flowers shares his personal recovery story and talks about the deeper issues behind po*******hy addiction, intimacy struggles, and secrecy.

One of the most powerful ideas in this conversation is that recovery changes far more than a behavior. It changes the way a person relates to themselves and to others.

The episode is out now.

We also created a free resource that goes along with the episode called The Hidden Battle.

March is Gambling Awareness Month.

The landscape of gambling has changed dramatically in the last few years. With sports betting apps, micro betting, and instant access from a phone, gambling has become faster, easier, and more addictive than ever before.

Many people struggling do not fit the stereotype. They are professionals, parents, leaders, and high performers who quietly find themselves trapped in a cycle of chasing losses and hiding the truth.

Gambling addiction is not about a lack of willpower. It is about a brain caught in a powerful reward loop that is designed to keep people playing.

The good news is that recovery is possible.

If this conversation resonates with you or someone you care about, it may be time to talk with someone who understands.

Because silence keeps addiction alive.
Honesty is where healing begins.

Cross-addiction happens when one vice replaces another.

A man may stop drinking but begin gambling. Stop gambling but escalate po*******hy. Quit substances but become obsessively work-driven.

Without rebuilding the reward system and addressing emotional avoidance, the pattern continues.

Valiant Living’s men’s residential program treats both substance and process addiction under one structured environment.

Why does everything feel flat in early recovery?

Because the brain’s reward system is recalibrating.
Addiction overstimulates dopamine pathways. When the substance or behavior is removed, natural rewards take time to register again.

At Valiant Living, our structured men’s program supports this neurological reset through community, accountability, and intentional environment.

Are polygraphs a safety tool or a weapon in recovery?
Used well, they can reduce anxiety and support accountability. Used poorly, they can deepen trauma.
We recently published an article explaining how polygraphs fit into recovery and when they should be avoided.

Are polygraphs helpful or harmful in addiction recovery? Learn when polygraphs support healing and when they undermine trust.

Living Valiantly

After more than 2 decades of developing, building and managing programs, Our founder Michael Dinneen finally met the partner he needed to take all of that experience and create something unique and special. Meeting Kyle Beard gave strength and structure to the vision. Kyle brings a wealth of business acumen wrapped in someone passionate about helping people heal. As a team Mike and Kyle balance each other in the creation and management of Valiant Living, a program designed for men who are truly ready for what we call “Expanded Recovery”. Our programming and housing allow men to feel safe and empowered as they dig deeper into themselves than most other programs ask.
