The moments that stress you, overwhelm you, or make you want to shut down are often the very places where healing begins. Most of us are taught to push those feelings away, power through, or numb out. But the cracks in our pace, the pressure points in our week, and the emotions we try hardest to avoid are often the clearest signals of what needs our attention. When you stop fighting them and start listening, something shifts. Clarity shows up. Light gets in. Growth becomes possible.

Trauma healing is often misunderstood. People expect intensity, breakthrough moments, or emotional collapse. In reality, the work that changes a life usually looks slower and steadier. It feels like leaning into just enough discomfort to grow without overwhelming your system.

That is the pace we teach at Valiant Living. Small, consistent steps forward that build capacity, safety, and real change.

At Valiant Living, healing isn’t about intensity—it’s about integration.

One of the core modalities we use in our programs is Internal Family Systems (IFS), a powerful model that helps clients understand and heal the parts of themselves that have been protecting against pain.

In this episode of the Valiant Living Podcast, therapist Sarah Houy guides host Drew Powell through a real IFS session, showing how this gentle, evidence-based approach helps unlock lasting change.

Process addictions—sex, work, food, gambling—are easy to miss because they often look like success. But if something becomes the only way to cope, it’s not success. It’s survival.

Before we can separate the addiction from the person, we have to first understand addiction itself.

When families (and therapists) take time to learn what’s really happening beneath the surface, compassion starts to grow, and healing can finally begin.

As Brooke Donohue shares in this week’s episode of the Valiant Living Podcast, education isn’t just information - it’s the bridge to empathy.

Brooke Donohue, family group facilitator at Valiant Living, uses a classic Looney Tunes moment to describe what it looks like to force love on someone who isn’t ready to receive it.

Just like the abominable snowman squeezing Daffy Duck too tightly, we sometimes smother the people we care about - thinking it’s love.
But true love gives space. It doesn’t force.

Living Valiantly

After more than 2 decades of developing, building and managing programs, Our founder Michael Dinneen finally met the partner he needed to take all of that experience and create something unique and special. Meeting Kyle Beard gave strength and structure to the vision. Kyle brings a wealth of business acumen wrapped in someone passionate about helping people heal. As a team Mike and Kyle balance each other in the creation and management of Valiant Living, a program designed for men who are truly ready for what we call “Expanded Recovery”. Our programming and housing allow men to feel safe and empowered as they dig deeper into themselves than most other programs ask.
