Speaking, education, being involved and learning from others has always been a big part of my practice and this past month has included all of that.
At the end of June, I had the opportunity to serve once again as an oral examiner for the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s annual board certification exam. I’ve participated in this process for several years now, and it’s something I’m proud to be a part of. Board certification plays a key role in ensuring public trust and professional excellence, and it’s an honor to contribute to that standard—not only as an examiner, but now as a member of the executive board serving as Treasurer.
In July, we also welcomed our first fellow, Dr. Ary Shay, who has hit the ground running. He’s been assisting in both the clinic and the OR, and will begin seeing his own patients next month. I’ve served as a fellowship co-director for years, and working directly with emerging surgeons like Dr. Shay is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. Educating the next generation helps ensure the field continues to grow in both skill and compassion.
I also had the chance to lecture on rhinoplasty and serve as a lab proctor at the 110th annual Head and Neck Anatomy course at Indiana University - the longest-running course of its kind in the country. It’s an excellent opportunity to help residents gain hands-on experience and explore the field of facial plastic surgery early in their training.
While my first passion will always be caring for patients and delivering outcomes that boost confidence and quality of life, opportunities like these allow me to continue growing as a surgeon and a teacher. I’m grateful to be part of a field where continuous learning and giving back go hand in hand.
