Public Service Announcement: Microchip your pets!
We receive a staggering percentage of pets without any trace of information for ownership, no microchip, no tags. The four pets featured here all arrived today, separately, as strays absent any identifying information. Clockwise from top left we have Derby A506649, Cypress A506641, Taupe A506643 and Ronnie A506658.
They appear to be in good shape and are friendly. We don't believe these to be unowned or uncared for animals. Our primary goal is to reunite missing pets with their families, and the fastest way for us to accomplish that is through registered microchips.
A pet microchip is an identification device that is approximately the size of a grain of rice and is inserted under the skin, typically in the shoulder area. When scanned with a microchip reader, which we have in all of our Animal Services vehicles and in our intake areas, it presents with a unique ID number which can be traced to the owner. It's similar to a tag, but cannot be removed.
While this technology isn't new, and isn't particularly cost prohibitive (this service is offered for $15 through our clinic, $30 through the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando), we sadly come across so many pet owners who haven't yet taken this step. We write this post to implore you to microchip your pets, if you haven't done so already.
This single act as a pet owner can be what reunites you with your missing pet, if they are ever lost. Don't wait for something to happen, take the right step now.

If you know the parent of any of these pets, we'd love to reunite them with their baby! Owners looking to reclaim are encouraged to visit the shelter as quickly as possible in person to initiate the process.
