✨ This , let’s shed some light on the unique challenges faced by Black autistic children. Current research suggests that a black autistic child is nearly half as likely to receive a diagnosis on their first visit to a speciality clinic as compared to other racial groups. In fact, black autistic kids typically have to wait about a year and a half longer than their white peers to receive a diagnosis. They are also much more likely to be misdiagnosed on their first visit, often with significant labels that can perpetuate harmful and inaccurate stereotypes. This delay impacts their access to vital early intervention services.

The team at GLC feels passionately about promoting healthcare equity for every child. Swipe to see some of the current stats on misdiagnosis, as well as some great resources for increasing awareness!

Another Milestone Monday to consider how and why children play with toys. At first, babies will throw, bang, or mouth toys. As their motor skills, language, attention, and visual perception develop they may start to use toys for more pretend play. Eventually, many children will engage in imaginative play with objects for entire play schemes(approximately 4 years old). It’s important to remember that toys are a means of learning, regulating, and interaction. The is NO WRONG WAY to play! Observe your child’s play style and meet them where they are.

When playing with your little one, it can be tempting to focus on asking questions (think: "It's a dog! What does the dog say?"). On this Milestone Monday, we want to encourage you to focus on commenting to your child and including adjectives and verbs (as well as nouns)! If you're playing cars, instead of asking about the color of the car, try "Look at that big car! Vroom! Cars drive fast!"

IEPS, 504s, MDRs, RTI, MTSS... the world of education has its own language, which can leave families feeling overwhelmed. Even for seasoned parents, questions like "Does my child need testing every 3 years?", "Is this the best placement for him?" , and "What do I do if she's not making any progress?" come to mind.

At GLC, we have over 15 years of combined experience working in school settings and helping families navigate the process. Whether you are looking for a second opinion, have a burning question, or just need support for an upcoming meeting, we're here to help.

Imitating scribbles typically starts by about 18 months of age. Milestones for copying include imitating horizontal lines and circles (around age 3), imitating vertical lines and X shapes (around age 4) and imitating shapes like squares and triangles (around age 5). As with everything though, different strokes (literally) for different folks! Wherever your child is at, focus on activities that build the strength and skills needed for the next step.

"So what do I do if my child is 2 and still won't scribble?"

Step 1: Take a deep breath. Remember--development is not always linear!
Step 2: Check out the recommendations in this post.
Step 3: Know that scribbling is our next goal. That may take a year, or it may take a week. However long it takes, it takes.

If you have questions about early writing (often called "prewriting") skills, give us a call! If you feel like your child may need extra support in this area, ask your pediatrician about a referral for Occupational Therapy. OT can make a world of difference!
