The Hamstrings consists of three big strong muscles which bring the heel towards the buttock. We use them every day when we walk or run, especially down hill and over time they can take quite a pounding and as a result trigger points are very common.

Some of the symptoms of Hamstring trigger points are: Posterior thigh pain sitting/walking (worse at night), tenderness in back of legs that may cause limping, the pain is worse on sitting, leg pain after (post) back surgery, hamstring pain on cycling/soccer/ basketball/tennis/football/soccer.

CAUSES: Prolonged driving, improper sitting/ work chair that digs into back of thighs, hip surgery, sitting cross-legged, hip/knee/ankle injury/ fracture, leg casts, high-heeled shoes, PSLE, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, improper stretching before/after sport. It is therefore very important to get stretching techniques down pat. Balls and foam rollers can be very good for relieving pain and stiffness when you are at home. Regular stretching with hot and/or cold can be helpful. Remember to warm up before and cool down after exercise. Hot showers/baths can be helpful. Check the car seat posture, work posture and cycling positions.

Here’s an exercise you can use with a foam roller sitting - locate the trigger point and place the roller about 10cm (4 inches) above the pain spot/trigger point - slowly roll the hamstring over the roller until you feel a sweet pain and pause on it until it eases; repeat a few times until the pain spot has remitted.
