Patriot Day honors the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost during the attacks of September 11, 2001. Today we remember the victims and pay tribute to the first responders and others who bravely risked their lives to help those in harm’s way.

Today we join the world in standing together to support those contemplating su***de.

Here are 5 ways to help someone thinking about su***de:

1. ASK DIRECTLY.
Don’t be afraid to ask, “Are you thinking about su***de?” It won’t plant the idea—it can actually open the door to help.

2. TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION IF NEEDED.
If they say yes—especially if they have a plan or access to weapons—get medical help right away. Safety is the top priority.

3. LISTEN WITHOUT JUDGEMENT.
If they’re open to talking, just listen. Avoid giving advice or trying to “fix” things. Empathy and presence matter most.

4. HELP BUILD A SUPPORT NETWORK.
Connect them with mental health professionals, trusted friends, or crisis lines. Support systems reduce the risk of future harm.

5. CHECK IN REGULARLY.
Follow up. A simple message or visit can make a huge difference—and may even save a life.
