Our Story
In my many years of professional life as a Clinical Psychologist, I had the opportunity and honor to work in a variety of settings. I began my career doing private practice, teaching and consulting. Over the years, in addition to always having a private practice, I taught at the college and university levels (including UCLA, UCSC, California State College at Northridge and Long Beach, Immaculate Heart College, and, The California School of Professional Psychology). I also worked as a consultant to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, doing psychological evaluations on law enforcement applicants and officers. Later, I moved to Wyoming, where I was the Chief Psychologist at the Pineridge Psychiatric Hospital for several years. There, I helped to set up an eating disorders program and also evaluated every patient who was admitted to either the psychology program or the chemical dependency program. I also supervised the therapy staff, taught classes to and did individual and group therapy with patients, and worked on innovating the development of wilderness therapy programs in collaboration with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Lander, WY. Next, I moved to Oregon and became Director of the Eating Disorders Outpatient Treatment Program at Portland Adventist Medical Center and began my private practice in Gresham, Oregon. After over thirty five years of practice as a Clinical Psychologist, I retired from my practice in 2012, to pursue my training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I was trained in more than one hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. I now have a private practice as a Board Certified Life, Health and Wellness Therapist/ Coach, which enables me to practice in a truly holistic way. I am now free to leave behind the world of being encouraged, if not forced, to view people as nothing more than a diagnostic disorder and instead, to view them as a multi-faceted, infinitely complex whole person. I work with people who are "sick" of being "treated" as nothing more than a diagnostic label, and who, instead, are ready to be seen, heard and treated as a whole person, seeking to live a balanced life. Drawing on my many years of extensive training and broad scope of knowledge, I will help you to create a completely personalized “roadmap to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals. Together, we will explore and find ways to improve your life. I will teach you how to: resolve negative beliefs and feelings about yourself rid yourself of depressed moods free yourself of preoccupations with and fears about food, body image and weight learn highly effective, proven techniques for managing health, work and environmental stress overcome worrying, anxiety, and fear acquire highly effective communication techniques and resolve relationship problems resolve grief, shame, and guilt increase motivation and be more assertive. Over my 35+ years of practice, I have worked with people with a broad variety of health issues, including: eating disorders depressed moods worrying, anxiety and fear auto-immune diseases cancer cardiovascular disease diabetes sleep disorders joint pain post-traumatic stress headaches sugar and other food addictions food allergies As a holistic practitioner, I teach people how to achieve and maintain a healthy digestive system, which is the basis of physical and emotional health. I also teach people that digestion is not just about food. It is also about your ability to "digest" the many unresolved issues in your life which effect your overall physical, emotional, and spiritual health. For example, if you are at war with your body, you will not attain good overall health until you "digest" and resolve all of the issues that underlie that conflict. I practice out of my home, which is in a beautiful country setting, and am also available for phone consultations. I consider one's connection to nature and animals to be a vital part of human health. Given all of my years of experience, I am able to work with adults, teens and older children, on most issues that arise by virtue of being a human being on the planet at this very difficult point in time.
