With sincere sympathy and love, we announce the passing of:

Miss Willie Marie Monroe
December 22, 1939 - May 26, 2026

Miss Willie Marie Monroe, 86 of Altavista, Virginia departed this earthly life on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at her residence.

Born December 22, 1939, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late John Samuel Monroe and Julia Lovelace Monroe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert "Jack" Monroe and two sisters, Louise Monroe and Gloria Jean Monroe.

Miss Monroe was educated in Campbell County Public Schools, graduating in the class of 1959.

"Miss Doll", as she was affectionately known as, was a childcare provider for local families. She then moved to Washington, DC and was a librarian of GAO for seventeen years.

Miss Monroe was a member of First Baptist Church in Altavista, Virginia, where she served as Youth Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, member of the senior choir, noon day bible study and deaconess.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Germaine Monroe of Altavista, Virginia and Julian Monroe (Taelor) of Morristown, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Clarence, Malachi, Tahj and Taedon; two great grandchildren, Caidence and Abbrielle; two sisters, Janice Monroe of Altavista, Virginia and Tracey Calloway (Curtis) of Chatham, Virginia; six brothers, John Monroe (Mattie), Bernard Monroe and Tony Monroe, all of Lynchburg, Virginia, Charlie Monroe and Pastor Isaac Monroe (Sandra), both of Altavista, Virginia and Darnell Monroe (Valerie) of Hurt, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at 801 16th Street, Altavista, Virginia daily from 12-7 p.m.

Mrs. Mary Hunt Mitchell
AKA "Tinnie Winnie"

May 2, 1948 - May 23. 2026

Mrs. Mary Hunt Mitchell, AKA “Tinnie Winnie”,78 of Hurt, Virginia departed this earthly life on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born May 2, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late George Hunt, Jr. and Mary Booth Hunt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Regina Mitchell; one brother, Harold Hunt; her sister, Edna Terry; four sisters-in-law, Jerlene Hunt, Clydia Mitchell, Patricia Mitchell, and Helen Thomas; and one brother-in-law, Larry McLaurin.

Mrs. Mitchell attended Pittsylvania County Schools, graduating from Northside High School in 1966. She was employed at Abbott Laboratories, Klopman Mills, Pluma, Inc. and retiring from Rage Plastics. After retirement, she returned to work part-time at Otter River Resource Center until the pandemic.

At an early age, she professed faith in Christ and joined the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Hurt, Virginia, where she served faithfully until her untimely passing.

Those left to continue her legacy and keep her memory alive are her husband, Harry Mitchell, Sr. of the residence; two sons, Ryan Mitchell (Francis) of Chester, Virginia and Harry Mitchell, Jr. of Laurel, Maryland; two daughters, Renita Mitchell of Hurt, Virginia and Renee Ridley (James) of Laurel, Maryland; nine grandchildren, Julian Edwards (Tiffany) of McDonough, Georgia, April Winn of Lynchburg, Virginia, Katina Garcia-Chavez of Camden, New Jersey, Antonio Thompson, Desiree Bucknor and Anthony Sinclair, Jr., all of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Destinee Duffy (Dalvin) of Altavista, Virginia, Jaidyn Mitchell of Laurel, Maryland and Xavier Mitchell of Chester, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Jordyn Mitchell and Jerai Duffy of Altavista, Virginia; her god-daughter, Sonya Monroe of Newport News, Virginia; two sisters, Theressa ”Fay” Ferguson (Kenneth) of Jefferson City, Missouri and Emma Hunt Younger (Calvin) of Greensboro, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Edith McLaurin and Shirley Fulp (Richard), both of Winston Salem, North Carolina; six brothers-in-law, Lester Terry, Jr. of Chatham, Virginia, Eugene Mitchell (Diane) of Winston Salem, North Carolina, John Mitchell (Carolyn) of Pfafftown, North Carolina, Rhondy Mitchell (Angie) of Wilmington, North Carolina, Kenneth Mitchell (Cynthia) of Concord, North Carolina and Paul Tyrone Mitchell of Goldsboro, North Carolina; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.

The family is receiving friends at 208 Grove Street, Hurt, Virginia from 2-6 p.m. daily.

It is with profound sympathy that we announce the passing of:

Mr. Edward Moore
April 15, 1958 - May 23, 2026

Mr. Edward Moore, 68, of Martinsville, Virginia departed this earthly life on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at his residence.

Born April 15, 1958, he was the son of the late Thomas Moore and Corrine Wimbush Moore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, Johnny and James Moore; and two sisters, Cornell Moore and Betty Roach.

Mr. Moore was educated in Pittsylvania County Schools and was employed by Craddock and Terry Shoe Factory in Gretna, Virginia. He believed in God and would occasionally attend Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle in Axton, Virginia.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of twenty-three years, Clarice Thompson Moore; his children, Nakesha and Steven Moore; two bonus sons, Shan and Dominique of Danville, Virginia; five grandchildren; three sisters, Rosa Nibblett of Axton, Virginia, Debbie Baskins (Darryl) of Hampton, Virginia and Maggie Smith (Robert) of Danville, Virginia; two brothers, Alfonso Moore (Ethel) of Blairs, Virginia and Ray Moore (Michelle) of Danville, Virginia; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and many dear friends.

Mrs. Virgie Reynolds, 83 of Gretna, Virginia departed this earthly life on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and CJ Jefferson in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Born April 16, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Walter Glass and Cora B. Payne Glass. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elsie Reynolds; her brothers, Paul Glass and Carl B. Glass; and her grandsons, Isaiah Jefferson and Elijah Jefferson.

Mrs. Reynolds was a woman of faith and a devoted member of Tree of Life Ministries. An avid Dallas Cowboys fan, she loved cheering for her favorite team. She enjoyed word search puzzles and watching game shows, especially Family Feud, her favorite—simple pleasures that brought her joy throughout the years. Above all, her life centered around her family, whom she loved deeply and cared for wholeheartedly.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Riley Moses Reynolds; her loving daughters, Tinnie Gregory (Tim), Barbara Jefferson (CJ), Etta Wimbish (Eddie), Shirley Lockwood, Audrey Powell, and Shelita Reynolds; her beloved grandchildren, Kim Sandidge, Eric Jefferson, Symone’ Jefferson, Breanna Jefferson, Jasmine Powell, Dominique Lockwood, Brittany Lockwood, Jaeda Reynolds, Alex Gregory, and Tevin Gregory; her great-grandchildren, Raelynn Sandidge and Amiyah Sandidge; one brother, Silas Glass; two sisters, Coretha Reynolds (Walter) and Geneva Davis (William); and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

Mrs. Cora Lee Hubbard Green
June 30, 1935 - May 7, 2026

Mrs. Cora Lee Hubbard Green, 90 of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a native of Halifax County, departed this earthly life on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

Born June 30, 1935, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Alberlie and Ellen Word Hubbard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Green; her only son, Charles A. Green, Jr.; one sister, Yvonne Hubbard Adams and her brother Thomas Hubbard.

A devoted woman of faith, Mrs. Green was a faithful member of New Joy Missionary Baptist Church in North Philadelphia for more than ten years. Her faith in the Lord was unwavering and guided the way she lived, loved and served others.

Those left to cherish her memories are her loving grandchildren, Charles A. Green, III and Alicia Green Erwin; three great grandchildren, Tianna Green, Charlese Green and Kyra Green; one great-great granddaughter, Saige Jalani Hall; her siblings, Deacon Berlie Hubbard of Gretna, Virginia, Sarah Holmon of Spring Lake, North Carolina; Betty Ward (Lawrence) of Gretna, Virginia, Ethel Callands of Java, Virginia, Delma Miller (Richard) of Gretna, Virginia and Thelma Stockton of Richmond, Virginia; her devoted companion, Shadow, the cat; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Michele Brandon Hairston

Mrs. Michele Brandon Hairston, 59 of Danville, Virginia departed this earthly life on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina.

Born February 26, 1967, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Darnell Brandon and Eloise Brandon.

She was educated in the Halifax County Public Schools, graduating in 1986. Mrs. Hairston furthered her education at Danville Community College, where she earned certifications in Pharmacy Technology and Medical Terminology. She was employed as administrative assistant at WDVA radio station, Danville, Virginia.

At an early age, Mrs. Hairston accepted Christ and became a devoted member of Mason Chapel Baptist Church.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Gary Hairston of the residence; her sister, Pamela Chandler of Alton, Virginia; her nieces, Keturah Baxter (Joseph Webb), Michelle D.
