I have heard with great sadness that my mentor in this great profession, Dr. James Cox, passed away yesterday. He was 84.
He was an inventor, teacher, author, chiropractic radiologist, researcher, and a hometown doctor of international renown. Despite being a speaker in high demand from Japan to here to Europe, he always found time for his students.
When I attended my first Cox seminar, I knew I had to know more. I flew to Lombard, Illinois to study from him and learn his technique when still a chiropractic student. I called Diane from Lombard with excitement, telling her I’d found the technique on which we would base our future practice. For the past 30 years, I’ve anchored this practice on the firm science of Dr Cox’s work.
Dr Cox gave me and many like me the tools for treating disc injuries, facet syndromes, osteoarthritic spines, spinal stenosis, and other clinical conditions in a way that is safe, effective, and scientifically sound. Myriads of doctors and patients were blessed by his teaching. 63% of all chiropractors use his technique today. I am proud to have been certified by Dr Cox to practice it and to embrace it as part of lifelong learning.
I wrote him a letter thanking him for his impact on my career and life. I’ll always treasure his response.
I’m saddened to hear that he’s gone. But I’m humbly thankful for what he taught and gave to me as a mentor. It truly built the foundation for this clinic as it stands today.
Godspeed, Dr Cox. Thank you for a life well lived, and beyond that, being an exemplar for excellence.
