Silent Noise - Suicide Prevention Awareness

Silent Noise - Suicide Prevention Awareness Dwight "Noise" Poole, left this world on November 26, 2019. His life, music, and death by suicide, touched many in his short time on this planet.

His memories, music, and art live on in each of us. ;

Like many great ideas, Fright Noise was inspired by something we saw elsewhere. A group in Boerne, Texas created a fun and unforgettable “run” that was perfect for couch potatoes and anyone not interested in a serious competitive 5K. Their Boerne 0.5K was built around fun and raising money for local charity.

After reading about it, I started thinking about how that idea could be adapted into something more meaningful here. The goal was to create an event that would remember those we have lost, celebrate life, and raise money for organizations devoted to mental health awareness and su***de prevention.

At first, we kicked around the logistics. Should it be held in July, around Dwight’s birthday? Could it be called the Clodhopper 0.5K? Or would it make more sense to hold it in October, tying it to the season and to the time when Dwight would DJ as Fright Noise? In the end, October felt right. The weather can be unpredictable, but Dwight loved Halloween, and the name carried the spirit of the event.

The inaugural Fright Noise was held on vacant town property off Broad Street, with New Oberpfalz Brewing serving as our home base. The turnout was strong, the response was positive, and it became clear this was something worth continuing.

Two years ago, we moved the event to Griffith Central Park, giving us more room to grow. The new location has allowed us to expand with vendors, display tables, music, and community participation. Even with that growth, the highlight remains the 0.5K “run.”

Fright Noise is intentionally short and accessible. It does not take up an entire afternoon, but it still creates space for connection, remembrance, laughter, and conversation around mental health and su***de prevention. Most importantly, proceeds continue to support organizations doing meaningful work in those areas.

This year’s Fright Noise will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Griffith Central Park. Pre-race festivities will begin around Noon, with the 0.5K run starting at approximately 1:30 p.m. We look forward to another great day with vendors, mental health organizations sharing resources, musical entertainment, and a community coming together for a purpose that matters.

What is Silent Noise?

Silent Noise wasn’t built in a boardroom.
It started with loss.

On November 26, 2019, the world changed permanently for me and for others. Dwight died by su***de that day. There’s no way to soften that. It leaves a silence that’s loud… and hard to explain.

In 2021, we decided to do something with that silence.

At first, there was no grand plan. No strategy.
Just a simple goal — help people.

We thought it would stay small. Local.
So we set up a table at Central Market in Griffith.

What happened next surprised us.

Young people stopped. They talked.
They opened up — sometimes quietly, sometimes all at once.
They weren’t looking for speeches. They were looking for someone to listen.

That’s when it became clear: this wasn’t small work.

Fright Noise 0.5K

Out of that came something different:

Fright Noise 0.5K — a “fun run” where no running is allowed.

Because this isn’t about performance.
It’s about showing up.

People walk. They laugh. They remember.
They honor the ones they’ve lost to su***de — openly, together.

It was a success.
And we made a decision: we’re going to keep it alive.

Who We Are Today

Silent Noise is now a 501(c)(3) non-profit, funded 100% by donations from friends, supporters, and partners.

No salaries.
Limited overhead.
The money goes where it should — to the cause.

Every dollar raised through Fright Noise and donations goes directly to mental health organizations.

What We Do

Through partnerships, awareness campaigns, and educational outreach, Silent Noise works to normalize one thing:

Talking about mental health.

Not polished.
Not scripted.
Real.

We focus on:

Helping people feel safe speaking openly about emotional struggles
Reducing stigma around mental health and su***de
Connecting people to real resources and support

We support organizations doing the work every day, including:

American Foundation for Su***de Prevention
988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline
The Gray Matters Collective
And other local mental health organizations
The Gray Matters Collective Vision

One of our biggest commitments is supporting The Gray Matters Collective through local chapters in schools and communities.

This is where real change happens.

Students:

Lead conversations about mental health
Look out for one another
Build communities where support is part of everyday life

It’s not adults talking at them.
It’s students showing up for each other.

The Goal

The goal isn’t complicated.

A culture where people look out for each other
Where asking for help is seen as strength
Where no one feels like they have to carry it alone
Where every voice matters

Some people suffer in silence.
Silent Noise makes sure they don’t have to stay there.

I don't want to get to far over my skis yet, things came together fairly quickly and there is work to do. One of my goals has been to establish a peer to peer group for mental health in one of our schools. We have supported The Gray Matters Collective through Fright Noise and it is a great fit.

The Gray Matters Collective approved the steps to establish the chapter, I had a very productive meeting with the School Administration at Griffith. Last night the School Board approved moving forward with the start up. We are looking at fall of 2026 and most importantly, to make an impact within the schools and community.

This is the first step. As we can receive approvals, we will be reaching out to more schools and communities.
