Our Story

Precision Family Eyecare was founded in September 2015 by two optometrists who wanted to deliver high quality care in a small town setting. Both Dr. Lucas Bell, OD and Dr. Brent Thornton, OD grew up in small towns in northwest Iowa (Algona and Sheldon, respectively). They met in optometry school in Memphis, Tennessee after attending our state’s rival universities (Dr. Bell graduating from Iowa and Dr. Thornton from Iowa State). Dr. Thornton spent his first three years after graduation at a busy private practice in Marshalltown, Iowa. He saw patients of all ages and utilized cutting edge technology to bring the best care possible to his patients. Dr. Bell spent two years working at a Lenscrafters in Des Moines followed by one year at a private practice in Winterset, Iowa. The doctors stayed in touch following graduation and both realized a desire to start a new practice that could incorporate the lessons of their combined experiences. Having grown up in small Iowa towns there was an eagerness to grow a practice based on relationships. Grimes, Iowa was pinpointed for this new practice because the doctors felt it maintained the small town ethics and charm they were raised on while also benefiting from the major growth seen throughout the Des Moines metro area.
