About Dr. Shahoud:

Dr. Geith Shahoud has had quite a journey from Syria to Western Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Damascus in Syria and practiced internal medicine for two years before taking up practice in Pittsburgh. He practiced internal medicine with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for three years, but his interest in psychiatry continued to grow. Not long after, he found out that the University of Missouri in Kansas City had a program that combined the medical aspect with psychiatry. He made the decision to move to Kansas City and take the course, graduating. He stayed and practiced child psychiatry at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Dr. Shahoud moved back to the Pittsburgh area and was hired as the Medical Director of Mental Health at Highland Hospital located in Connellsville PA. While there he treated adults who had problems ranging from drug and alcohol abuse to mental illness and emotional and behavioral issues and children with many different behavioral and pervasive development disorders such as Autism or Rhetts. Dr. Shahoud began working at Southwood Psychiatric Hospital for children located in Pittsburgh, PA. His patients there have a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. Dr. Shahoud has also worked at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital located in Latrobe PA where he treated children and adults with many different psychiatric disorders. In 2009, Dr. Shahoud successfully opened his own private practice called Western PA Behavioral Health Resources. He then opened a second office in Latrobe, PA and in 2010 opened a third office in Butler, PA. The practice continues to grow each day. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that one in every 150 children is born with Autism. Dr. Shahoud thinks it’s a problem in our local communities and also thinks we are lacking in services for them. He hopes his offices will be able to work closely with the schools in the areas to screen for any problems.

Today marks the start of National Autism Acceptance Month!

Every April we celebrate and honor those individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by highlighting their unique identities.

This month is meant to help increase understanding, inclusion and support of Autistic individuals by focusing on their perspective and talents.

Let’s all come together to recognize these wonderful individuals by commending their progress and achievements and addressing the challenges that they face.

If you would like to be more active in promoting lasting change in the community, you can:

➡️ educate yourself and others about ASD though webinars, books and classes
➡️ participate and volunteer at events that promote awareness
➡️ use social media or other platforms to get the word out to advocate for their rights
➡️ donate or create a fundraiser to support local organizations that offer resources for ASD
➡️ wear your blue 💙to show support as blue is the color associated with Autism awareness
➡️ and as always, BE KIND by helping to create an inclusive and supportive environment

Here at WPABHR, we celebrate these individuals all year long because with the right support and resources, they can live a beautiful and fulfilling life.
