It was a BEAUTIFUL day! A group of tenants enjoyed walking outdoors this morning instead of on the track or in the hallway. Several tenants were able to get a mile in.
We started our first batch of wooden flowers today and will be painting various kinds throughout the summer. Our goal is to have an amazing bouquet created by the start of fall. With the warmer temps, many of the tenants ventured outside after lunch. Some opted to relax on the porch in the sunshine while others enjoyed the Fun2Go bike. We enjoyed seeing all the beautiful flowers as we rode through the Seeland Park neighborhoods.

Happy Cinco de Mayo from all of us at Saint Francis!

Today we held our joint birthday party for all the residents with birthdays in the month of May. We celebrated in style with non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiris and chips with queso 😊 To finish out our birthday bash we took turns demolishing a festive piñata.

This week has been filled with sweet treats and fun at the Hammond Center!

On Thursday we learned about the history of the Kentucky Derby as we watched a documentary called “Run for the Roses.”
That afternoon we pulled out the ice cream machine and ate soft serve while some tenants and staff attempted to play a Kentucky Derby insipired horse race game. One of the horses kept falling over but we gave it a good shot 😊

We had the pleasure of celebrating Marge’s 92nd birthday on Friday morning. With the help of some glazed donuts and the color blue, her birthday social was a success!

Friday afternoon some of the ladies made lavender sachets to scent their apartments. This craft gave us a chance to put the HC stamp collection to use as we dressed up the bags with ink designs.

💚 Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

May marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the importance of mental well-being. This year, the residents and staff of Seeland Park, St. Francis Manor, and Hammond Center have come together to kick off the month by showing our support and love, reminding everyone that mental health is just as crucial as physical!

This month, we encourage you to put your mental health first by:

🔅Taking Time for Enjoyment:
Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Whether it's reading a book, gardening, exercising, or enjoying a hobby, make sure to carve out time for yourself!

🔅Socializing with Loved Ones:
Connect with friends and family. Social connections play a vital role in maintaining emotional health!

🔅Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle:
A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can significantly impact your mental well-being. Strive for a lifestyle that supports both your mind and body.

🔅Join the Movement:
Let’s make Mental Health Awareness Month a time for learning, sharing, and supporting one another. Together, we can create a compassionate community that values and prioritizes mental health!

Colorful flower planters from Montezuma FFA Greenhouse adorned the Social Center before being purchased by those eager to decorate their patios and the front of their homes to welcome summer! A huge thank you to Ag teacher Hannah Garland and horticulture students, Addyson Probasco, Shiressa Wetering and Elizabeth DeJong, for sharing information about the FFA greenhouse with over 60 Seeland Park residents, Hammond Center tenants and their guests. The girls also did an awesome job demonstrating how to plant containers with attractive combinations of flowers and plants to provide eye-catching colors, contrasts and textures 🌸🌷🌼🪻

In a matter of days, May will arrive. May 1st, also known as May Day, marks the tradition of creating May Baskets. As we assembled our baskets today, the tenants reminisced about making them as children and delivering them to their neighbors. Our afternoon was spent playing Bingo, and Betty emerged as the winner of a beautiful fall quilt, generously made and donated by Bill.

History of St. Francis Manor

Ever wonder our history? Why are we named St. Francis Manor. Many of a certain age can remember where we come from - a hospital called St. Francis which used to sit on this location. In memorandum of that hospital we decided to take on the name again and now with the completion of the Hammond Center for Assisted Living, we will become a Life Plan Community and provide the finest assisted living that Grinnell has to offer! https://www.stfrancismanor.com/living-options/assisted-living/
