Thanksgiving in Rural Wisconsin
Shared by Joy Murphy
Growing up in Wisconsin meant Thanksgiving fell into another important holiday, deer hunting season.
During that 10-day season, we celebrated family and friends, giving thanks for continued friendships, family, and a safe hunt.
On Thanksgiving day, Mom always told the hunters to be in the house at noon; the turkey and all the fixings would be ready to eat. Inevitably, it never quite happened that way- there would be deer to track, they lost track of time, etc. I would have gotten frustrated and said Forget it but food and cooking were her joy, and whenever they walked in the door, 2 or 20 of them, she would happily have a fancy table set with an amazing meal.
Never quite figured out how she kept everything fresh, warm, and delicious!
