Let’s talk about candles. In my mind, they fall into three categories.
Category one candles are made with 100% pure natural fats like beeswax and tallow with natural scents such as essential oils, herbs or spices. These candles do not have a strong, overpowering scent, but they do create ambience in a space. Beeswax candles have even been shown to purify the air. These natural, safe candles should also be wicked with either pure cotton or wooden wicks.
Category two is something of a hybrid. Plant-based waxes like soy are somewhat better than paraffin, but these candles still use synthetic fragrances are often labeled natural, and/or safe. If you can smell the candle burning as soon as you enter the building or the room, it is likely scented with fragrance oils. If the scent lingers in a space after burning, it is a toxic fragrance oil. Remember, anything you smell your body has to detoxify as the scent goes to your liver from your lungs. For healthy people this may not be much of an issue, but if you suffer from any diagnosis or sensitivity, this can dramatically add to the burden your body is already carrying.
Category three, the most dangerous, are your typical Bath and Body Works or Yankee style candles. These candles are made from petroleum based wax, are heavily scented and dyed with synthetic chemicals, and often also have lead wicks which release tiny particles of lead, a heavy metal and known carcinogen, into the air each time the candle is burned.
An honorable mention for toxins are wax melts, which are paraffin based and also scented with toxic fragrance oils. These have been heavily marketed as safe because they do not use lead wicks and do not release lead into the air, but the toxic chemical fragrances are just as bad as the worst offending candles.
Many people also confuse something called a fragrance oil with an essential oil. This is an important consideration. Fragrance oils are synthetic and highly toxic. They are created in a laboratory to mimic fragrances that humans naturally find pleasing, yet are filled with chemicals and endocrine disruptors. These fragrances are known carcinogens and completely poisonous, and there is lots of research available showing how they are toxic to both humans and animals. They should be avoided at all costs.
It’s important to learn these facts for yourself so that you can ask the right questions when purchasing products for your home. Many manufacturers, either out of ignorance or deliberate obfuscation, claim their products to be natural when in fact, they may be still poisoning your indoor air with harmful chemicals.
