Periodization... 🧠🏋️‍♀️

🏋️‍♀️ Performance Tips - “The priority in a company is to prepare to perform. The priority in a vocational school is to develop dancers who can cope with the diverse demands of today’s choreography. Professional dancers endure a high work volume; they often dance 6-8 hours a day during rehearsal & load increases—up to 10 hours a day—with performances. As demands increase with a performance, the volume of supplemental training needs to decrease, though the intensity should be maintained or increased” (Wyon, 2010).
🏋️‍♀️ Class Isn’t Enough - “Studies have noted that class is inadequate to cause a training adaptation in the aerobic or anaerobic systems of dancers, & these systems (especially the aerobic) have increased demand during performances, leading to physiological adaptation” (Wyon, 2010).
🏋️‍♀️ Tapering - “Is a technique that facilitates the reversal of training-induced fatigue without losing training adaptations” (Wyon, 2010).
🏋️‍♀️ “Has been used in the training of elite athletes over the past several decades” (Bartolomei et al., 2014).

Let’s talk core... ⬇️📈

✍️ Summary
🧠 It’s about finding a balance
🧠 But doing 1000 crunches isn’t the answer - You need to be training the core dynamically & against various positions of gravity
🧠 It’s not one single muscle - it’s a group of them!
🧠 “Core support refers to a group of very deep muscles that lie in the lumbar area & pelvis and engage to protect the lumbar from injury. This is referred to as core stabilization, but this seems to suggest to dancers that there is a static/rigid approach. This is not the case. Core support can be ongoing during all dance activity” (Krasnow et al., 2017).

LET'S TALK SPLITS...

✏️ Hands in line with hips, not too forward or back
✏️ Spine neutral, core engaged & your BEST posture
✏️ Legs in a straight line
✏️ Think of it this way - Imagine your posture in splits translates to your standing dancing. So would you do a developpe or battement with your spine crunching or arching? Nope
✏️ Alignment during stretches is very important
✏️ If they have full splits with proper technique, I like giving them a challenge
✏️ Arms 5th high
✏️ Arms 2nd arabesque
✏️ Forward fold over front leg
✏️ Gentle arch back to back leg as back knee bends (Be careful on knee)

Let's talk about these two layers👇

🎂 I call these layers to the beautiful cake we're building where dancers know their anatomy and can actively apply concepts in various movement patterns.

1️⃣ Layer 1 of the cake is really learning the concepts & terminology - "Teachers can facilitate their students’ understanding of turnout by providing a conceptual framework for kinesthetic experience & by structuring their classes to include opportunities for simple, specific movement explorations" (Daniels, 2007)

2️⃣ Layer 2 of the cake is movement explorations where dancers get the chance to apply the concepts into more complex movements - "Dance Kinesiology courses illuminate the anatomical structure of the body, yet memorizing the names & orientations of body parts is not always an optimal means for dancers to synthesize this material. As movers, dancers need to experience this information and make meaning of it from a number of perspectives" Geber & Wilson, 2010).

🤩 Highly recommend these two articles

An EASY way to teach anatomy!! 🤩

💡 Who said teaching anatomy at a young age had to be hard? I use this with my dancers all the way from age 8 up to the college level.
📚 Implementing Dance Science principles into your dancing/teaching does not always have to be complex!
🙏🏻 The fact of the matter is that for some dancers, verbal cueing will simply not be enough for the way that they learn.
📘 Here’s research to support this statement: “Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI theory) can be integrated into dance classes to make them more effective. When dance educators include activities that strengthen the musical, visual, linguistic, logical-mathematical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and bodily-kinesthetic intelligences into every class, each student is touched and learning increased. The integration of these activities leads to best practices in dance education, creating classes that go beyond simple dance technique” (Gilbert, 2003).

SISSONE TIPS 😀

✅ Side Ones - Travel towards front foot & change feet (if they’re traveling forward)
✅ Push off 2 feet, land on one foot
✅ Side Ones - Shoot foot like a side degage with sticker heel to audience
✅ Hit your best 5th with heel to big toe & best posture
✅ Bellybutton to front, no twisting hips
