🚨 STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED – MAJOR WINTER STORM APPROACHING CONNECTICUT 🚨
Governor Ned Lamont has declared a State of Emergency ahead of a major winter storm expected to significantly impact Connecticut beginning Sunday and continuing into Monday. Travel conditions are expected to become extremely dangerous.
❄️ What to Expect
A powerful storm system will bring heavy snowfall statewide, with totals generally ranging from 12–16 inches along the coast, 16–20 inches across central areas, and up to 18–24 inches in higher elevations. Periods of very heavy snow are possible, with snowfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour, which can quickly lead to whiteout conditions and severely limited visibility. Winds may gust 20–30 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow and near-blizzard conditions at times. Travel impacts are expected to be significant to major, especially Sunday into early Monday.
🕛 Commercial Vehicle Travel Ban
Beginning 12:00 PM (Noon) Sunday, January 25, commercial vehicles — including tractor trailers, trucks, RVs, tankers, and vehicles with trailers — are prohibited from traveling on all limited-access highways in Connecticut until further notice. This restriction does not apply to emergency response vehicles, utility vehicles, or vehicles transporting essential personnel or supplies.
⚠️ Governor’s Safety Message
“This storm is going to significantly impair the ability to safely drive… Do not risk your life and the lives of others.” Residents are strongly urged to be at a safe location by Sunday morning and remain there through the duration of the storm, which is expected to last into at least Monday morning.
🧊 Additional Concerns
The snow will be dry and powdery inland, which makes it easier to plow but also more prone to blowing and drifting. While widespread power outages are not currently expected, conditions may still change. A prolonged stretch of cold air will follow this storm, increasing the chance of additional winter weather in the days ahead.
✅ Now is the time to prepare
• Avoid unnecessary travel
• Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors
• Charge devices and gather essentials
• Monitor official updates
Further announcements will be made when travel restrictions are lifted. Stay informed, stay prepared, and most importantly — stay off the roads when conditions deteriorate.
