The American Academy of Optometry recommends getting an eye exam every year, to help identify changes in eye health.

In addition to updating your prescription to improve your visual clarity; a dilated eye exam can help detect conditions before they cause serious health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Most ocular diseases require early intervention in order to help prevent vision loss down the road.

If you are due for your annual eye exam or are looking for a new eye doctor give our office a call at 860-445-1000. Or you can schedule online at the link below!

As a follow up for Glaucoma Awareness Month, we'd like to talk a bit more about eye pressure and the causes of Glaucoma.

A build up of increased eye pressure causes optic nerve damage for patients with glaucoma or at risk for developing glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease that will begin with no noticeable symptoms, until you start to undergo vision loss.
There is no cure for glaucoma, only treatment options, and early detection is extremely important in preserving vision.

So, how Is eye pressure measured?
Eye drops are put in your eyes to numb them.
Then the doctor or assistant gently touches the front surface of your eye with a device that glows with a blue light. Other times a different handheld instrument is used.
Both methods apply a small amount of pressure to the eye.
This allows your ophthalmologist to measure the pressure inside each eye.
During this test, it is very helpful to relax and breathe normally.
Each person's eye pressure is different, and there is no single correct pressure for everyone. Generally, the range for normal pressure is between 10 and 21 mmHg ("mmHg" means "millimeters of mercury," a scale used to record eye pressure).

Most people who have glaucoma will have an eye pressure higher than 21 mmHg. However, some people with pressures between 10 and 21 mmHg may still have glaucoma.

Through a full dilated eye exam, we examine your eye pressure as well as check the health of your optic nerve and retina. Patients who are risk for glaucoma may also undergo visual field testing to check for any loss of vision after signs of optic nerve damage are found.
If you are due for your annual eye exam give us a call at 860-445-1000. We are located at 1041 Poquonnock Road, Groton CT 06340.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month! Glaucoma a disease that starts silently with no noticeable symptoms until the patient starts to undergo vision loss. It affects over 2.7 million Americans, and can happen anytime but is most common in individuals over the age of 45.

There is no cure for Glaucoma, and no way to reverse vision loss caused by glaucoma. But there are treatments available that work to manage the pressure that builds up from increased aqueous humor.

The best treatment is through early detection with a dilated eye exam. During an eye exam not only do we check for an eyewear prescription but we also check the eye pressure, angles of the drainage canals, the health of the optic nerve, and more.

Today marks the last official week of Autumn, however it certainly feels as if we've been in Winter already for a quite a while.

At Groton Eye Center we want to remind you to protect your eyes during the next few months. During the winter we are more likely to experience symptoms of dry eye, as the air is lacking humidity and we are often spending time inside with dry heat. The best way to combat symptoms of dry eye is re-wetting drops.

The brands we most commonly recommend to our patients are Optase, Systane, and Refresh. During these cold dry months you can use them up to four times a day if you are noticing symptoms of dryness. These symptoms can include intermittent blurred vision, tearing, mild redness, and discomfort.

However, a lot of symptoms of dry eye can be similar to those of an eye infection. If you have any concern that you are experiencing an eye emergency please give us a call at 860-445-1000 to ask to speak to our triage staff. We also have an on-call doctor available 24/7.
