Julie Watson, M.D., Chief Medical Officer for INTEGRIS Health, joined leadership from OU Health, Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City, and SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital for a joint media event to address the worsening COVID-19 situation in Oklahoma. COVID-19 cases, fueled by the highly contagious Delta variant and a low vaccination rate, have pushed Oklahoma City hospitals, as well as our local hospitals, to capacity. Hospital leaders are asking Oklahomans to wear their masks and get vaccinated in order to slow the surge of hospitalizations.

Masking is a good thing. As a surgeon, obviously I’m used to masks. During an operation, they protect your open abdomen from my breath (or cough!). So I do a double take when I see unmasked folks at the store during a worldwide pandemic.

Masking. It makes sense to me as a doctor, American and human. It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had to check hospital capacity before accepting surgical emergencies. If this gets any worse, we run the risk of cancelling elective procedures again.

We can change it. We have to. It’s not political, it’s the right thing to do.

p.s. How do you like my “surgical” mask? It would work in a “pinch”.

Working towards normal surgery practice. We are resuming the most urgent procedures at the hospital now. Each week should be less restricted.

We are expanding clinic hours to see new and existing patients.

We are humbled by our community members who have donated medical supplies and offered to sew masks. We continue to be proactive in building up our supply of PPE to prepare for the potential surge of COVID-19 patients. We are still accepting medical supplies and homemade masks.
