As winter settles into Oklahoma, INTEGRIS Health would like to remind the community that cold and flu season is now in full swing. Seasonal viruses can spread quickly during the colder months, leading to increased illness, school absences and strain on families. INTEGRIS Health clinicians encourage Oklahomans to take simple preventive steps to protect themselves and others.

Cold and flu symptoms can appear quickly and may include congestion, sore throat, fever, cough, fatigue and body aches. Individuals experiencing high fever, difficulty breathing or symptoms that worsen should seek medical care promptly.

“With cold weather comes increased cold and flu symptoms,” says Danielle Kerns, MSN, FNP-C, with INTEGRIS Health Express Care in Miami. “Simple precautions like good hand hygiene and staying home if you are ill can help stop the spread of illness. When cold or flu symptoms appear suddenly, having access to care is important. Our hospital leaders rolled up their sleeves this week for Shelter Volunteer Day at the Community Crisis Center, and they brought the teamwork with them.

From painting and freshening up the grounds to clearing brush and helping make the outdoor space safer and more welcoming, they showed what leadership looks like in action: service, compassion and community.

November marks National Diabetes Awareness Month, and INTEGRIS Health Grove Hospital and INTEGRIS Health Miami Hospital are shining a light on the growing impact of diabetes in Oklahoma’s rural communities. With nearly one in ten Oklahomans living with diabetes and many more at risk, early detection, education and prevention remain critical priorities.

“Diabetes prevention is truly about partnerships between patients and their health care providers,” says Jennifer Mason, PA-C, with INTEGRIS Health Medical Group Miami. “When patients come in for screenings and talk openly about their lifestyle and concerns, we can work together to create a plan that helps them stay healthy for years to come.”

Diabetes is one of the most common and preventable chronic diseases in the United States. Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and regular health screenings play a major role in prevention and management. INTEGRIS Health encourages individuals to take small, sustainable steps toward healthier living, such as choosing balanced meals, staying active and maintaining regular checkups with their health care provider.

Our caregivers went all out this Halloween with a pumpkin decorating and costume contest that brought smiles all around the hospital! From spooky to silly and everything in between, creativity was on full display.

Breast cancer doesn't wait and neither should you. Haley Adams, D.O., with INTEGRIS Health Medical Group Grand Lake General Surgery, recently spoke on KSN's Living Well segment about the importance of breast health screenings.

Regular screenings like mammograms can catch breast cancer before you even feel a lump. That means better treatment options, less invasive procedures and a much higher chance of survival. In fact, when caught early, the 5-year survival rate is nearly 99%. That’s not just a number, it’s someone’s mom, sister, best friend or even you.
