Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. Routine screenings can identify precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer, and they can detect cancer at an early stage when treatment is most effective. Health experts recommend that adults at average risk begin colorectal cancer screenings at age 45. Individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors may need to begin screening earlier.

“Preventive screenings are one of the most powerful tools we have to save lives,” says Haley Adams, D.O., with INTEGRIS Health Medical Group Grand Lake General Surgery. “We know that people in rural communities often face additional barriers to care, but taking time for a screening can make all the difference. Early detection greatly increases the chances of successful treatment.”

Common symptoms of colorectal cancer may include:
-Changes in bowel habits
-Blood in the stool
-Persistent abdominal discomfort
-Unexplained weight loss
-Ongoing fatigue or weakness

By increasing awareness and improving access to preventive care, INTEGRIS Health hopes to help more Oklahomans detect colorectal cancer early and improve outcomes for patients and families across the state.
