Lilith is known for being Adam’s first wife. She was created from the same dust at the same time as Adam and therefore considered herself to be his equal. Confident in her own power and sovereignty, Lilith refused to be subservient to Adam. At this point in the story, we are told she was banished from the garden for her disobedience and rebellion. She is then turned into a demon who preys on men and children.
Lilith would disagree with all of this.
She would tell you that she chose to leave. That leaving was the only way she could honor her authenticity. That the garden could never be paradise if she was not free to be herself and seen as a worthy and equal partner.
Those who have heard the stories of Lilith’s demonic fate and evil deeds may be reluctant to believe her. They might wonder why others would go to so much trouble to villainize her if she was innocent. They might question why she would risk everything to make this choice.
Lilith would tell you she was blamed and shamed just as most women are when they call out the injustices that they face. That she made this sacrifice in the hopes that others would not have to. That she calls to women to learn from her story and find the courage to reclaim their power.
After Lilith is gone, the story continues with the creation of Eve, made from Adam’s rib in an attempt to make a more compliant help-mate. Eve’s passivity is temporary. It only lasts until the snake appears.
At this point, Lilith would ask you to consider how the story might change if it wasn’t actually a snake, but Lilith, returning to the garden to try to free Eve? She would say, what if Eve wasn’t tempted or coerced at all? What if Eve was already questioning her position and her worth? What if Eve was searching for something more?
Maybe, Eve approached Lilith and said “Is this all there is? Is this all I am? I feel like there should be more. I feel like I could be more”?
Maybe, Lilith responded by saying “There is and you are”?
Maybe, Lilith took Eve by the hand and showed her a different way to be?
In this reimagining, Lilith’s complexity is honored. She knows herself fully and shows up as fiercely independent with a strong sense of justice and boundaries. She becomes a champion for women who are disconnected from their authenticity and power. She acts as a guide, helping with shadow work, healing and integration. She encourages us to question, challenge and demand more. She is the Goddess we call on when we need to turn our pain or anger into action and create a different a world.
To honor and connect with her energy:
- Set up an altar with dark candles, roses, fruit, chocolate and/or wine
- Listen to music and move your body. Choose something that would be considered sensual or
angry, preferably by a female artist.
- Unleash your wildness by screaming, howling, stamping your feet, etc.
- Embrace activism by volunteering or donating to a cause that helps women.
- State an affirmation like
- I am powerful
- I trust myself and my decisions
- I release worry, fear and doubt as I follow my path with courage and confidence
