🇺🇸 Honoring Our Heroes This Veterans Day 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have served our country with courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication.

As a family-owned funeral home, we understand the meaning of service, tradition, and respect. It is our privilege to stand beside the families of veterans—to remember their stories, honor their legacies, and ensure their service is never forgotten.

To all who have worn the uniform: thank you for your service.
Your strength and sacrifice continue to inspire us every day.

🕊️ With love, gratitude and respect,

Joseph E. Deko
Owner

Joe is a life-long resident of East Haven. He is a graduate of East Haven High School class of 2005, and proud member of the EHHS Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Graduate- Class of 2024. He is the son of Susan and the late Robert “Bobby” Deko. He has two brothers, Robert Jr., and Anthony Deko. Joe is the epitome of a public servant, he is a career firefighter in Guilford, CT, a position he has held since March of 2010; he is the treasurer of the Riverside Volunteer Fire Company in East Haven; He is a member of the East Haven Democratic Town Committee, and is a fourth time elected member of the East Haven Legislative Town Council serving as the Chairman for the third term. Joe was the Vice President of the Guilford Professional Firefighters Union- Local 4177 for many years. He is an active member of St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish and currently serves on the Parish Council and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3300. Joe is the past President and trustee of the Shore Line Trolley Museum and Branford Electric Railway Association. He is a board member of Our Community Hero’s Incorporated, which is a non-profit organization that his brother Robert founded, which provides care packages for deployed members of the military from East Haven, and surrounding communities, as well as providing financial relief to families of first responders who have either passed away or are disabled from injuries sustained from duty.

He is very proud of his family and his hometown. His father Bobby was an East Haven firefighter prior to his death; his mom Sue is a nurse and has worked at various assisted living facilities, his brother Robert is a police officer with the North Branford Police Department, and his brother Anthony is a firefighter for FDNY assigned to Engine 298 in Queens.

Joe began his funeral career in early 2013. Working in a funeral home was always a goal of his, one he talked about since he was a young child. After the sudden passing of his father, Joe felt that he needed to fulfill his dream of providing high quality death care, just as he was shown when his father passed away. He met with David Brennan of East Haven Memorial who was in need of an extra set of hands. He attended Mortuary School at Lincoln College of New England in 2014 after working with David for over a year. Lincoln College was then bought out by Goodwin University which is where he graduated from. While attending Goodwin, He obtained certification through the National Funeral Directors Association as a Certified Cremation Service Provider. He also served on the Funeral Service Advisory Board for Goodwin University for three years, and during the accreditation process from the American Board of Funeral Service Education. Joe lives in East Haven with his wife Kristina and their chocolate lab Bruno.

Team Highlight:
James Integlia
Owner and Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer

A licensed funeral director and embalmer in Connecticut. The son of William “Bill” and Elizabeth “Liz” Integlia, he has lived in the Greater New Haven area his entire life and is a 2013 graduate of Branford High School. He is also involved in the Knights of Columbus, is a volunteer for Wreaths Across America, and a previous volunteer at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven. Working part-time as a hired pallbearer in high school and college provided his first introduction to funeral service. In 2015, while a journalism student at Hofstra University, James’ maternal grandfather passed away. The compassionate and attentive care received from the funeral directors further encouraged him to enter the funeral profession. He began working at W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, in Branford in September 2016 and entered mortuary school the following spring in March of 2017.

While enrolled in mortuary school, he earned the Certified Cremation Services Provider (CCSP) designation from the National Funeral Directors Association. In addition, James took on part-time responsibilities at several other local funeral homes to gain more hands- on experience in caring for grieving families. Mortuary classes also served as a first introduction to Joseph Deko, as the two shared several classes together and began their friendship.

Following graduation from Goodwin College in 2019, James began work as a funeral director and embalmer, earning Connecticut licensure in April of 2020. The funeral business was substantially affected by the COVID pandemic, limiting crowd sizes, travel and visitation restrictions prevented many families from holding the traditional services they were accustomed to. James recognized the need to adapt to the uncertain circumstances each family faced as they sought to honor their loved one. Always seeking to serve families with the same compassion, dignity and respect that he was met with during their time of need, James worked with many families to tailor funerals to the ever- changing regulations as well as their own personal comfort level with the public. He also adopted technologies like “Zoom” and “Facebook Live” to stream and record funerals and memorial services for those who couldn’t be in attendance in person.

Despite the difficult and often unpredictable circumstances of the COVID pandemic, James’ commitment to serving clients with the same amount of care and attention to detail with which his family was served has never been stronger. James’ and Joe’s ability to adapt to the changing consumer trends while still providing top quality service will allow them to set themselves apart from the competition and help to better serve their community when called upon.
