When people ask me what using colloidal silver daily instead of chemical-laden mouthwash has to do with my gut health and inflammation…
“Toxic Tuesday: Poor oral health causes gut dysbiosis!
Today’s post may elicit the response, “Well, duh!!” The general public often has a much easier time with concepts which are so obvious. Unfortunately, the same is not always true of medical and dental professionals. We are trained to think as though our area of anatomical specialty exists in a vacuum. This is clearly NOT the case. EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED!
If you have experienced poor oral health and systemic health issues, please know that there IS A CONNECTION! Today’s study which comes from the “Journal of Oral Microbiology” (PMID: 30911359) illustrates:
“Oral bacteria spreading through the body have been associated with a number of systemic diseases. The gut is no exception. Studies…have indicated that oral bacteria can translocate to the gut and change its microbiota and possibly immune defense. The displacement of oral bacteria particularly occurs in severe systemic diseases, but also in patients with “chronic” periodontitis. Thus, “P. gingivalis”, which creates dysbiosis in the subgingival (under the gums) microbiota and immune defense, may also cause dysregulation in the gut. A dysbiotic gut microbiome may cause diseases elsewhere in the body. The fact that “chronic” periodontitis may affect the gut microbiota could imply that consideration might in the future be given to a coordinated approach to the treatment of periodontitis and gastrointestinal disease.”
If you are dealing with ANY systemic health issues, please know that your oral health is connected to it. Make sure that you have a knowledgeable and open-minded dentist on your health team, particularly if their approach to care honors biological health principles.
