Recognizing the Signs of Emotional Dysregulation in Kids 🎮🌊🏃♂️
We recently had the joy of spending a week with our 10-year-old grandson, and wow—what a week it was!
Like many kids his age, he loves playing Xbox and watching YouTube videos of his favorite games. We give him time to enjoy this kind of downtime, but we also try to be really mindful of when enough is enough.
👉 Some signs we watch for that let us know he’s had too much screen time:
• Increased irritability
• Big emotions over small things
• Frustration that escalates quickly while gaming
He’s not quite ready to self-monitor yet—and that’s totally okay. Kids need loving adults to help them regulate and set healthy limits.
We’ve found that balance is key. Every day, we make time for movement, nature, and connection. This week we:
🌊 Tubed on the bay
🎣 Fished and played football in the water
🏖 Built sandcastles and swam
🎲 Played Uno, Jenga, and backgammon
📚 Read books and listened to Audible
🎯 Practiced safe BB gun target shooting
🎶 Enjoyed music, yard work, and long beach walks
It’s amazing what time in nature and real-world play can do for a child’s emotional regulation. Watching him run, jump, explore, and reset in the fresh air was the best part of our week. 💙
If you’re seeing signs of emotional dysregulation in your child, especially after screen time, it’s okay to set boundaries with love. And even better—they do get better at handling transitions over time when we support them with consistency and care. 🌿
