Ballet dancers are incredible at creating beautiful lines, but sometimes those lines are held together with a little too much tension.
This dancer was relying on her upper traps to control her overhead arm position. When the upper traps take over, the scapula loses its stable anchor and the body has to work harder to maintain alignment.
Instead of cueing her to simply “relax the shoulders,” we used a PRI technique to activate the lower traps, triceps, and abdominals together. This combination helps anchor the scapula to the rib cage so the arm can move overhead with better control and less compensation.
The result?
Less upper trap dominance and smoother, more efficient upper extremity motion.
Sometimes better movement isn’t about trying harder, it’s about getting the right muscles working together.
Dancers: if you’re struggling with shoulder tension, posture, or overhead arm control, a movement evaluation can help uncover what your body is really using to stabilize.
