Did you know that nearly an estimated 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease each year?

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement, causing symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and slow movement. It is characterized by the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain, leading to a deficiency in this neurotransmitter.

Physical Therapy plays a critical role in improving the mobility, flexibility, strength, and balance of patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Vestibular physical therapy has been found to be very effective with improving functional balance and reducing fall risk in patient's with Parkinson's disease.

Here at Centric Physical Therapy, we frequently treat patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Interventions include vestibular rehab, balance retraining, strengthening, and flexibility exercises to improve quality of life and reduce fall risk. Did you know that your bones are constantly in a state of renewal; they undergo a process called remodeling that replaces old bone tissue with new every 10 years or so.

Your bones are not as static as they may seem. In fact, they are dynamic structures that are constantly being broke down and rebuilt through a fascinating process known as remodeling. This process ensures that your skeletal system remains strong and capable of supporting your body throughout your life.

Every 10 years or so your body replaces old bone tissue with new, which helps to maintain optimal bone density and strength. This continuous cycle is essential for repairing micro-damage from everyday activities and adapting to the stresses placed upon them. During remodeling, specialized cells called osteoblasts create new bone, while osteoclasts break down old bone. This intricate balance is crucial for maintaining bone health.

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones and is often called a "silent disease" because there are typically no symptoms until a fracture occurs. Engaging in regular weight bearing exercise can help prevent and manage osteoporosis.

Here at Centric Physical Therapy we specialize in evaluating and treating orthopedic injuries and surgeries. Along with managing and preventing osteoporosis through strength, flexibility and balance training. Call us at (228) 831-5830 for more information on what we can do for you. 💚💙

Have you been dizzy when changing positions of your head or body? Is the sensation an external movement or spinning? If so, you may be experiencing BPPV.

By the age of 70, 50% of all individuals will have BPPV at least once in their life. BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) is a sensation of spinning that occurs with changes of position like turning over in bed, sitting up from lying down, lying down from sitting, bending forward or looking up. The spinning sensation typically persists for a few seconds up to one minute before resolving. This occurs due to the movement of otoconia (calcium carbonate) that are generally described as "crystals" in the inner ear. The movement of the "crystals" occurs in a semi-circular canal of the inner ear which produces an active firing of nerve cells that stimulates a reflex which causes the eyes to move rapidly producing a sensation of spinning or movement. This can lead to a loss of balance and falls.

If you have been experiencing these symptoms, contact your primary physician or local vestibular physical therapist for an evaluation. Attempting to perform repositioning maneuvers at home is not recommended and can lead to a worsening of symptoms.
