♿️ Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to commemorate the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 and to uplift the disability community. It’s a time to honor the history, achievements, and experiences of people with disabilities, while continuing to advocate for full inclusion, visibility, and equality.
Dr. Maya Angelou’s connection to this cause was deeply personal. Her son, Guy Johnson, lived most of his life with a disability and used a wheelchair throughout his adult years. Through their bond, she witnessed the resilience, dignity, and brilliance that define the disability community.
She once wrote:
“Continue to allow humor to lighten the burden of your tender heart;
Continue in a society dark with cruelty
to let the people hear the grandeur of God in the peals of your laughter;
Continue to let your eloquence elevate the people to heights they had only imagined;
Continue to remind people that each is as good as the other
and that no one is beneath nor above you.”
This month and always, we honor the beauty of difference, the power of perseverance, and the truth that disability is a part of humanity, not apart from it.
