I'd like to share a story of the very first professional massage I received. I was just 18 years old. I think it was a gift from my mom. It's hard to remember way back then. I was struggling mentally, and emotionally after a traumatic incident. I vaguely remember the therapist's calm presence when I nervously walked into her massage space. It's was very dimly lit. The ceiling was backlit with space and stars (a popular theme in the 90s). It was pretty psychedelic. I took a deep breath and relaxed. During the session I wanted to cry. I didn't know it then but she was calming my nervous system that had been in flight or fight for so long. She planted a seed in me. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had no idea that one day I'd become a massage therapist and that I would practice it for more than 2 decades!! This tells you the power of massage, it's not just working on muscles and fascia. It's not just for chronic pain. We live in a touch starved society and massage helps bridge the gap, offering nurturing and safe touch. When we are hurting so badly and don't even have the words to express why, massage can be just what we need.
