Hey fans of the Old Gunter Telephone Exchange, it is with mixed emotions that I announce that the OGTE building will be going up for sale in the coming weeks. I have spent the last 18 years restoring and loving this building more than I should have. It was indeed an honor to save a Gunter landmark such as this.
Built in 1900, this is the oldest building left in Gunter. I traced every owner back to the Gunter Townsite Corporation in 1901. And of course, it was the location of Gunter’s first Telephone Business, thus the name. Not chosen on a whim, but the actual function of this home and business of the Cunningham Family that ran it until 1955 when Texas Telephone bought them out.
My hope is that someone who loves Gunter and history as much as I do will purchase this building and keep the Gunter spirit alive and well for many more years.
The building was completely renovated between 2005-2008. Literally everything was replaced during this period. So the frame is 122 years old the shell, systems and interior is newish, but true to the period.
