Today marks the last day of autumn, with winter starting tomorrow. But for many, winter is actually fall season. With the hectic pace of the holidays, serious injuries from ice-related falls inevitably occur. And falls on icy surfaces are a major cause of ankle sprains and fractures. It’s also possible to fracture and sprain an ankle at the same time, and a bad sprain can mask the fracture. That’s why it’s best to have an injured ankle evaluated as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment. See a foot and ankle surgeon if you have prolonged pain from an ankle injury.

People with reoccurring foot sores or ulcers are in a constant battle to save their feet from amputation. Nearly 85 percent of lower-extremity amputations are preceded by foot wounds that simply will not heal or keep coming back. Foot ulcers can be caused by many different ailments in the body, from diabetes, to circulatory problems, to issues with the mechanics of the foot or leg. Foot and ankle surgeons need to dig deep to find the underlying causes and use treatment methods beyond just caring for the wound itself to fix the problem and prevent the wounds from reoccurring. Being proactive is key to keep feet healthy. Patients who experience repeat foot ulcers fare best when they take charge of their foot health with the help of a foot and ankle surgeon.

More than one in five adult Americans currently suffer from bunions, and nearly two-thirds will develop a bunion in their lifetime. For those considering surgery to relieve bunion pain, there is good news - bunion surgery might not be as bad as you think. Bunions can often be treated nonsurgically, but when bunion pain becomes a daily occurrence or limits a person's ability to enjoy hobbies or perform a job, surgical intervention can return a patient to optimal function. Techniques used today ensure minimal pain, earlier and improved mobility and decrease the likelihood that a bunion will return later in life

Anyone experiencing pain or discomfort from a bunion should seek care from a foot and ankle surgeon to discuss treatment options.

Many people who have suffered ankle sprains in the past could be at risk for more serious damage as they age and try to stay in good physical condition. It is estimated that one in four sports injuries involves the foot or ankle, and a majority of them occur from incomplete rehabilitation of earlier injuries. A sprain that happened years ago can leave residual weakness that isn’t noticed in normal daily activity, but subjecting the ankle to rigorous physical activity can further damage improperly healed ligaments and can cause persistent pain and swelling. For anyone hoping to regain past athletic fitness, it’s recommended that you have that old ankle injury checked out by a foot and ankle surgeon before becoming active again.

A black, purple or brownish discoloration under or involving a toenail is frequently due to trauma to the toenail, such as when something is dropped on the toe. The color results from a blood clot or bleeding under the nail and may involve the entire nail or just a small portion of it. This can be very painful when the entire nail is involved and may need medical attention to relieve the pressure caused by bleeding under the toenail. It is important that all black toenails be evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon to rule out serious causes like melanoma.
