I've witnessed so many people I know extremely well become victims of "cognitive dissonance" lay person's example. A truly guilty man is arrested and imprisoned for let's say Bank Robbery, after 15 years he has told lie that he was no where near the robbery.
There is a dissonance, a transformation to a point that he could pass a polygraph affirming he did not commit this crime. In the context of religion this often manifests itself.
The Vatican in Rome is worth more than
